The following article contains SPOILERS for Elle season 1.

It's a perfect day for Legally Blonde fans, as not only is the first season of Elle available for streaming on Prime Video, but the platform has already greenlit the prequel show for season 2 ahead of its premiere. Though Legally Blonde was a massive sleeper hit when it premiered in 2001, earning almost $142 million globally and spawning a successful sequel and Broadway musical, this is the first time Elle Woods has successfully taken on the small screen. (A failed pilot chronicling Elle's continuing misadventures at Harvard was created in 2003, but never went to series.)

The charming first season of Elle takes place in 1995, with the future lawyer having recently celebrated her 16th birthday. Though Elle (Lexi Minetree) loves her carefree life as a California girl, she's in for a rude awakening when her family abruptly moves to Seattle, Washington. Like at Harvard, Elle is a total fish out of water, as her bubbly personality and love of pink clash with her new classmates' cynical grunge-er attitude and oversized flannel uniform.

However, Elle isn't afraid of a challenge, and she sets out to make friends at her new school, learning to step out of her comfort zone while showing her peers that it's cool to care. At the end of the season, Elle even has the opportunity to return to Los Angeles, but she chooses to go back to Seattle. While her return isn't exactly smooth sailing, it sets the stage for an exciting Elle season 2.

Elle Season 2 Latest News

One of the biggest frustrations of the streaming era is how long a popular show can take to release a new season. Fortunately, though, while Elle season 2 has yet to announce a release date, filming for the sophomore installment is already underway. JustJared reported seeing actresses Minetree and June Diane Raphael, who plays Elle's mother, Eva, filming for the show's second season on June 22, 2026, in Manhattan, New York.

As Elle Woods, Minetree was clad in her character's signature pink, accessorizing with a Kate Spade taxi cab purse while Raphael wore a stylish cream coat and white pumps. Actress and director Shiri Appleby (Roswell, Unreal) was also seen on set directing. The exact plot of Elle season 2 has yet to be revealed, so as of this writing, it's unclear why Elle and Eva would be in New York City.

Elle Season 2 Confirmed

Though fans of a new streaming show often have to hope and pray that the series will get picked up for a second season, Elle audiences can rest assured that the California blonde and her new friends will be returning to Prime Video. The renewal was announced in January 2026 along with Elle's premiere date of July 1, 2026 (via Deadline).

It's clear that the streamer has faith in the series and the power of the Legally Blonde franchise to renew Elle so early. Original Elle Woods actress Reese Witherspoon, who also serves as executive producer of the Prime Video series, said,

Twenty-five years after the world met Elle Woods for the first time, it’s a dream come true to share the story of how she became the unstoppable force we all fell in love with. Discovering Lexi Minetree and watching her step into Elle’s fabulous shoes has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. I think our series’ themes of kindness, authenticity, and believing in yourself will resonate deeply with fans of the original films and new audiences alike. Working with our incredible Hello Sunshine team, Amazon and our visionary writers and directors to bring Elle’s high school journey to life has been a tremendous joy. I can’t wait to share Season One with the world and start rolling cameras on Season Two!

It obviously wouldn't be Elle without Minetree returning to the titular role, and based on the NYC-based film shoot, it looks like Raphael will be reprising her role as Eva. Beyond that, in February 2026, Deadline announced that Never Have I Ever actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan would be joining the Elle season 2 cast as new character Sam.

The media outlet described Sam as "Elle’s foil – possessing all our hero’s ambition and none of her optimism. She’s the founder, editor-in-chief, and lord baron of the school newspaper, the commissioner of the grammar police, and the enemy of joy. If Cosmo is Elle’s bible, The AP Stylebook is Sam’s holy grail…"

Though no other cast members from Elle season 1 have officially been confirmed to return, it's likely that all of the actors will be back in the second season. This includes Tom Everett Scott as Elle's father, Wyatt Woods; Chandler Kinney as Seattle mean girl, Kimberly; Jacob Moskotivz as Elle's love interest, Miles; Gabrielle Policano as the 'zine-writing "anti-Elle Woods", Liz; Zac Looker as British skateboarder and another romantic interest of Elle's, Dustin; and Amy Pietz as Donna, Liz's mom and the secretary at Elle's new school.

Sadly, a recurring actor who will not be in Elle season 2 is the late Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek, who played Dean Wilson, the school superintendent and mayoral candidate whose campaign Eva was assisting. Van Der Beek passed away on February 11, 2026, and Elle marks his final acting credit.

Though story details for Elle season 2 remain under wraps, it looks like Elle will be remaining in Seattle and dealing with some boy troubles. In the season 1 finale, Elle realizes she's running away from her problems by returning to California and taking the "safe" out with her Cosmo internship. She convinces Eva that they should move back to Seattle, and arrives just in time to see Liz perform at the winter (in)formal.

At the dance, she and Dustin share a kiss, which crushes Miles, who witnesses it. This horrifies Elle, whose sad reaction then upsets Dustin. It's all setting up a love triangle for Elle season 2, which is a bit of a strange choice considering Legally Blonde fans know she marries Emmett Richmond (Luke Wilson) in the sequel, rendering whatever romantic drama happens in her teenage years essentially moot.

Thankfully, romance isn't the main storyline in the series, as season 1 centers more on Elle trying to fit in in Seattle while attempting to expose the school's shady secrets with her new friends. Activism and social justice will likely play a role in Elle season 2 and will probably involve journalism, based on what's been revealed about new character Sam. This may very well be tied to the reason why Elle and Eva find themselves in New York City.
