A new Dracula adaptation starring Ella Purnell is revealed.
Several of Ella Purnell's movies and shows are rooted in horror or the supernatural, including Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, and Yellowjackets. She has also played a serial killer in Sweetpea, the optimistic and courageous Lucy MacLean in Prime Video's Fallout, and voiced Jinx in Netflix's hit animated fantasy series Arcane.
Now, Audible has revealed that Purnell is in Dracula, an Audible Original that reimagines Bram Stoker's classic novel as a full-cast audio experience. She voices Mina Murray, whose husband vanishes in Transylvania, and her investigation leads to the discovery that she's being hunted by Dracula. The iconic vampire is voiced by Wicked and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey.
The English-language cast also features Aimee Lou Wood (The White Lotus) as Lucy, Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes) as Jonathan, David Jonsson (Industry) as Dr. Seward, Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Mrs. Westenra, and Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) as Professor Van Helsing. Lucy is Mina's closest friend, who falls under Dracula's control. Professor Van Helsing is enlisted to help, but it is Mina's intelligence, determination, and analytical mind that may be the key to defeating the vampire, as long as he doesn't get inside her mind first. The story is also being adapted into Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian, LATAM Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. In these versions, Dracula and Mina are respectively voiced by Omar Sy and Deva Cassel (French); Riccardo Scamarcio and Benedetta Porcaroli (Italian); Matthias Schweighöfer and Jeanne Goursaud (German); Asier Etxeandia and Claudia Salas (Castilian Spanish); and José María de Tavira and Esmeralda Pimentel (LATAM Spanish). They will be joined by full ensemble casts as well.
On October 1, the English, French, Italian, Castilian Spanish, and LATAM Spanish versions will be released, with Aurelie de Troyer, Head of Audible Content, International, speaking about how the timing is perfect for Halloween, along with what makes this adaptation of Dracula unique. This is what Audible does best, crafting immersive audio experiences that transport listeners into the heart of the story. When Dracula whispers in your ear, when you hear his footsteps in the dark but see no reflection, that's when you understand why we're the home for this story. Our production elevates the psychological thriller at Dracula’s core, with the battle between Mina and Dracula as the heart of it all.
We've assembled world-class casts across seven languages, from Jonathan Bailey and Ella Purnell to Omar Sy, Riccardo Scamarcio and Matthias Schweighöfer, exceptional international talent delivering a truly global Dracula. With director Mary Lambert at the helm and a haunting score by Ilan Eshkeri, we're bringing this ambitious production to life just in time for Halloween.
Prior to Audible's Dracula, Lambert directed the 1989 film adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary. The original score was composed by Ilan Eshkeri, whose previous credits include Audible's 1984 and House of Guinness. The story was adapted by Robyn Ahern, with this being her first lead credit after being a recipient of the Bisha K. Ali Screenwriters Fellowship.
As an all-time great horror monster, there is always interest in Dracula, whose story is being reimagined with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Bailey is coming off of Jurassic World Rebirth, Wicked: For Good, and Bridgerton season 4, while Purnell reprised the role of Lucy in Fallout season 2. She also has Fallout season 3 and Sweetpea season 2 on the way. The adaptation's Professor Van Helsing star, Gyllenhaal, reimagined a different classic monster earlier this year via The Bride!, which she directed and wrote.
The German version of Dracula will make its Audible debut on February 9, while the Brazilian Portuguese one, whose cast has not been revealed yet, will be released at an unconfirmed date in 2027.
Dracula comes to Audible on October 1 and is available for pre-orders now.
