Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
Xbox is in an apparent state of flux right now, but the latest news regarding The Elder Scrolls 6 actually sounds optimistic. While rumors suggest that lay-offs and studio closures might pick up under the Xbox umbrella soon, The Elder Scrolls and developer Bethesda Game Studios obviously won't be on the chopping block.
In recent years, however, it's become increasingly hard to imagine a day when The Elder Scrolls 6 might actually release. A release date or even release window still hasn't arrived, but the latest official comments directly address the extended wait for the next installment in the iconic fantasy series.
In a new Entertainment Weekly cover feature focusing on Xbox's 25th anniversary, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard provided a brief update on the status of The Elder Scrolls 6. The game is Bethesda's "biggest project right now," with "the majority of the studio" currently working on the project.
It's no surprise that The Elder Scrolls 6 is Bethesda's number one priority, and Howard is aware that fans have both lofty expectations and thinning patience. "We know we need to get it right," he adds, "and it's been a long time."
In the same interview, Howard addresses season 3 of the Fallout show, which he claimed would "start shooting soon" (for reference, these comments appear to be from May). He also dropped a mention of the upcoming Marvel's Blade game from Bethesda subsidiary Arkane Studios. While Marvel's Blade was conspicuously missing from Xbox's Summer Game Fest showcase, Howard told Entertainment Weekly that Arkane is "doing a really, really great job."
None of this is exactly revelatory, but it's good to hear that Bethesda is focusing on what fans want most. The studio has its fingers in many pies, from the ongoing updates for Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online to publishing games from its subsidiaries. Part of the reason for The Elder Scrolls 6's extended development cycle was the focus on Starfield for a while, which has now receded in favor of the return to Tamriel.
Hopefully, we'll actually get some looks at what Bethesda is working on in the near future. I'm not holding my breath for a surprise drop of The Elder Scrolls 6 gameplay, but I'd happily take a new tease of Marvel's Blade. Xbox is in a very volatile position, but the studio has a lot of exciting projects that just need to make it to the finish line.
