Whether you realized it or not, today is a monumental day for The Elder Scrolls 6, marking the official 8-year mark since Bethesda's Todd Howard first unveiled the 36-second teaser during the E3 2018 showcase on June 10, 2018. In that time, it's hard to believe fans have had virtually no additional information officially revealed about the project, and frankly it's been a frustrating near-decade for Elder Scrolls gamers across the board.
While Todd Howard has given fans extremely vague bits and pieces since TES6 was first teased, the lack of any substantial new footage or details has left fans speculating over the game's progress. However, for the first time in what feels like forever, fans just got an official new teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6.
In a new Variety interview with XBOX COO Matt Booty, the exec was grilled on a range of topics, providing his perspective on the shape of the industry as it stands today. One question in particular was related to Todd Howard's impressive ability to skirt any questions related to The Elder Scrolls 6, and Booty actually offered up a totally unexpected insight into the progress of the game:
"I can tell you, having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen Elder Scrolls playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time."
While it isn't exactly a massive new announcement or mind-blowing gameplay trailer, this is the closest thing fans have gotten to an actual update since The Elder Scrolls 6 was first shown in that brief teaser trailer 8 years ago today. Booty's comments also gave us a bit of insight into how Howard and other execs are in a tricky spot when it comes to giving fans updates:
I would say one of the more challenging balancing acts of someone in a job like mine is balancing that you want to go show the world all the cool stuff you’re working on, and you want to get them excited early, but we also know that we want to wait till the right moment. And when you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got. And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, hey, it’s coming soon.
Booty's comments are extremely promising, all things considered, and while he's still managed to avoid giving us any specifics about what could possibly be the most anticipated open-world fantasy game of all time, it's reassuring to know that Bethesda isn't going to jump the gun on The Elder Scrolls 6 release just because gamers are feeling overly anxious.
