A brand-new update about the Elden Ring movie is a fantastic sign for the video game adaptation, which is avoiding a major fantasy franchise problem. Based on the 2022 video game by FromSoftware, the Elden Ring movie will bring the world of The Lands Between to the big screen. Much like the game, it focuses on the fantasy world after the Shattering, wherein the powerful Elden Ring was shattered into seven Great Runes, now in the hands of powerful, corrupt demigods.
The movie is directed by Alex Garland, who wrote a 160-page spec script and pitched it to both FromSoftware and A24. The movie will be one of the most expensive films ever produced by A24, sporting a budget of around $100 million. The cast of Elden Ring is also impressive, with Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Emma Laird, Peter Serafinowicz, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, and Jefferson Hall starring in the film.
But that's only the beginning for the dark fantasy movie and the action-heavy story it's expected to tell. While it's unclear which roles each actor will occupy, it seems likely the story will focus on the Shattering in some capacity, maybe even the journey of a Tarnished like in the game. Luckily, one major update means A24 has plenty of time to develop the movie into what it desires. It's news that, when compared to other big budget movies, puts Elden Ring well ahead of all of them.
A24 Has A Lot Of Time To Get The Elden Ring Movie Right
Elden Ring has already finished filming, with the movie being shot from April 2026 to July 2026, lasting only 100 days. However, the film itself doesn't come out in theaters until March 3, 2028, meaning there's a massive gap between the movie's finished filming time and when it arrives in theaters. It's still possible that reshoots will be necessary, since a massive movie such as this will likely require it sometime along the way. But, now, the Elden Ring movie is already in post-production.
Elden Ring was filmed in Scotland, North Wales, and Iceland.
This gives A24 another 18 months to carefully craft the CGI necessary to bring The Lands Between to life. The movie will need extensive visual effects for the fantasy world to appear on the big screen. But, with filming already done, it gives CGI artists ample time to work. Bad and rushed CGI has plagued big-budget movies for years, with crunch time being the most egregious aspect. But Elden Ring's approach is a positive sign that artists will get plenty of time and breathing room to deliver some impressive effects.
There's Already A Lot To Be Excited About With The Elden Ring Movie
The CGI is just one of many exciting things surrounding the Elden Ring movie. For one, Garland's script earned the blessing of game director and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki himself. The movie is also being produced by both A24 and Bandai Namco Filmworks, emphasizing how much of a collaborative effort it is between both filmmakers and video game producers. Since Garland has a strong, personal connection to the game, his script and its faithfulness will be an exciting element of the production.
With the movie still a year and a half away, it seems like Elden Ring is taking its time to ensure it's the best version of itself it can possibly be before it comes to the big screen. The amount of time going into the post-production, and therefore the high level of CGI necessary, means there may be some stunning visuals ahead. They'll be made even more impressive by the smaller budget, a showcase for how well tentpole features can be produced, even without a budget stretching into the hundreds of millions.
