It's hard to believe that Elden Ring came out all the way back in 2022. With how relevant it still is (with a Switch 2 port still in the works), it felt like it came out yesterday.

But what about Elden Ring 2? Well, based on community reactions, including passionate fans on Reddit, it could be a take-it-or-leave-it situation.

Is Elden Ring 2 Coming?

It Feels Inevitable, But We Can Wait

Do you want an Elden Ring 2? Well, "it depends," is the answer most fans seem to be going with. On one side, they're happy with how the series stands right now: "There absolutely does not have to be an Elden Ring 2. It's a complete story. They should just make a new game." Another user thinks that there isn't much left to do with an Elden Ring 2: "I'm just not sure that it should. Elden Ring was such a special experience and I think it pushes the FromSoft formula to the absolute limit."

But on the other side of the equation, Dark Souls fans know the power of sequels. Dark Souls 3 is arguably one of the best games From Software has made to date. One could argue that they were willed into existence by the series' publisher, Bandai Namco. But famed director Hidetaka Miyazaki still worked on Dark Souls 3 directly, and it ended up being a huge hit critically and commercially.

As another user puts it, inspiration can strike at any time: "There's more to making games and making sequels than money. What if there's no more story to tell? I'd rather have a new IP than a forced continuation of something I love."

We Can Never Really Rule It Out

It Made Too Much Money To Drop

If something makes money, odds are it'll come back again. It's a rule of media in general, and From Software isn't immune to giving us sequels.

That said, I'd prefer From to deliver new, unique experiences, as that's what it does best. We might not get an Elden Ring 2 anytime soon, but we could see a further iteration from their formula they've been working on since King's Field, into Demon's Souls and beyond.

As one user puts it, you cant really predict what From Software or Miyazaki will do next: "Father Miyazaki is quite mysterious when it comes to sequels. Demons' Souls was a standalone. Dark Souls was a "spiritual sequel" that eventually became a trilogy. Bloodborne and Sekiro showed up, again single standalones despite being wildly praised. Now Elden Ring shows up, and... and we don't know. So-called "common sense" states that if something is successful, of course it'll be a sequel. Miyazaki though, he has different ideas -- sometimes he just says "I've done all I want with this universe" and moves on, completely regardless of success."

If we do get another Elden Ring, I'll be there day one to play it. The real question is: what is From Software working on that could potentially surpass Elden Ring?
