It took me many years to finally gather the courage to play Elden Ring, and it was back in 2025 that I finally bit the bullet and began my very first playthrough. What followed was total obsession, and after getting that 100% completion, I proudly announced, like many others, that Elden Ring was one of the greatest pieces of storytelling of all time.

Released back in 2022 as a rare standalone title from FromSoftware, Elden Ring became an overnight success, selling over 30 million copies and cementing itself as one of the best-selling video games of all time. Now, with a roguelike spin-off, award-winning DLC, and even an upcoming live-action movie under its belt, the love for Elden Ring is far from dwindling, but what does this mean for the future?

Elden Ring's Success Makes A Sequel Seem Inevitable

As with other standalone titles from FromSoftware, mainly Bloodborne, Elden Ring has fallen victim to its own success. Put simply, it is so loved by audiences, that many have been calling out for more, especially a potential sequel. However, with Hidetaka Miyazaki himself saying that there are no plans for the Elden Ring world to be extended, it seems as though FromSoftware has turned its attention to other IPs and projects.

Whilst this may suit many fans who are happy to play anything that FromSoftware has to offer, other hardcore Elden Ring fans are not going down without a fight, but it seems as though those calls for a sequel may be gathering weight following a recent report.

According to Reuters, Kadokawa, the parent company of FromSoftware, is set to hold a shareholder meeting later today. This comes after calls for CEO Takeshi Natsuno to be removed from his position by Oasis Management, Kadokawa's biggest shareholder. Why, you may ask? Well, according to Oasis Management, Kadokawa failed to fully capitalize on Elden Ring and, as such, the company has been facing declining profits in recent years.

Now, I am no expert here, but it seems unlikely that a single-player game will continue to bag you profits almost five years on from its launch, and with Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring: Nightreign, and the upcoming Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition being released since 2022, it seems hard to believe that anything else could have been done... other than a sequel.

Would FromSoftware Agree To Do Elden Ring 2?

However, as previously mentioned, with Miyazaki seemingly not on board with an Elden Ring sequel, there may be a bit of a stalemate following the upcoming shareholder's meeting. As much as fans may want one, I'm sure many would agree that they would only want a sequel if Miyazaki was on board and had a clear story to tell.

Following the news, said fans took to r/GamingLeaksAndRumors to share their thoughts.

"The greedy bean counters yearn for yearly Elden Ring with battlepass and microstransactions," one comment read. "They want Elden Ring 3 yesterday! That 25 million copies sold is nothing to them. F**k them. Hope Fromsoft continues doing what they like, otherwise Miyazaki can just take his ball and leave." Another agreed, adding, "Sellling 30 million copies of a critically acclaimed singleplayer game is failing to capitalize on success to shareholders in big 2026? This industry is over."

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Elden Ring, but for now, FromSoftware continues to work on its upcoming projects, and we can only hope that they are left to do so in peace.
