A Tuscan villa full of happiness

His 35-year marriage inspired Richard E Grant to write a memoir, A Pocketful Of Happiness, based on his wife Joan's last months before she succumbed to cancer.

So it gave the actor special joy this week to help Sting celebrate his 32nd wedding anniversary with Trudie Styler at their Tuscan villa. 'Loyalty, generosity and love,' Grant captioned this snap of him with Sting and Mickey, 40, eldest of the couple's four children.

The smart set's talking about... Glyndebourne's musicians having to kip under canvas

As the curtain falls on the last production of the season at Glyndebourne Opera in East Sussex tomorrow, pity those members of the orchestra who have to pack up their tents along with their instruments.

While well-heeled opera-goers, paying up to £280 for a ticket, are stacking empty bottles of champagne into their picnic hampers, they will be unaware that some members of Glyndebourne's resident orchestra, the London Philharmonic, have spent the three-month season camping because local accommodation is too pricey. 'The trouble is everything is now an Airbnb and much more expensive than a traditional B&B,' one musician tells me. 'So some of those who live too far to drive home each evening bring tents to pitch in local campsites.'

Glyndebourne provides overnight accommodation for its orchestra's instruments as well as showers and changing facilities for the musicians, but nothing else. A spokesman tells me: 'Players are paid travel and distance fees and are encouraged to use the free minibus service to and from Lewes station.'

Why Justin doesn't dare cross Mishal

Referring to former US First Lady Michelle Obama, Justin Webb says: 'She's frightening'

One of Mishal Husain's colleagues on BBC Radio 4's Today programme admits she leaves him petrified.

Referring to former US First Lady Michelle Obama, Justin Webb says: 'She's frightening. I have to say she's got a sternness about her that reminds me of Mishal Husain. She is lovely and a good friend, but I wouldn't want to cross her, and you get the impression with Michelle Obama you would not want to cross her.'

Peter Davison, who made his name as Tristan Farnon in the BBC's All Creatures Great And Small, failed to impress everyone with his fame. Recalling a visit to a petrol station in his new Renault 18, the actor, 73, says: 'The guy behind the till asked if I was that vet off the telly. When I said I was, he said, 'So why are you driving that pile of rubbish?' I rather crumpled.'

At least Princess Margaret didn't whinge in public

At least Queen Elizabeth's sister never turned her private complaints into a whiny memoir like Prince Harry's Spare. (Princess Margaret pictured in 1955)

The Beatles biographer Hunter Davies has encouraged his friend, the Swinging Sixties model Miranda Amapola Symington, to write her memoirs at the age of 77.

The book includes an exchange with Princess Margaret, whom she met at a party in London's Covent Garden. 'I said to the Princess, 'I do hope you've had an enjoyable day',' she recalls in My Name is Not Matilda: Miranda's Memoirs. ' 'Well', the Princess said. 'I had to go to some awful place in the south of London and open this hall. The trouble is, my sister gets all the top jobs, and I get the boring ones'.'

Having won over pals such as Princess Beatrice with her themed dining sets, Alice Naylor-Leyland is now working with royalty.

The socialite, 38, who's married to Tom Naylor-Leyland, heir to a baronetcy and the £176 million Fitzwilliam landowning fortune, has launched a new tablescape collection designed with Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece, 55. Her husband, Pavlos, is head of the former Greek royal family.

Alice shared this picture of the pair in the Hamptons, New York state, with dinner plates from the range, which cost £152 for a set of four.

'Collaborating with Princess Marie-Chantal on our new pink and blue joyful summer table has been a dream and a great honour,' Alice says.

'I've always admired her style and attention to detail.'

(Very) modern manners

Liberal Democrats are known for beards, sandals and eating muesli, so a visitor to the National Liberal Club, off Whitehall, was shocked when his footwear raised hackles.

'The doorman got sniffy about my sandals,' says the guest. 'I pointed out several women had just strolled in with sandals and he shouldn't be so sexist.'

Comic Katherine admits: I do have a favourite child

The Canadian-born star of Channel 4 panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats has a three-year-old son and a 20-month-old daughter with civil partner Bobby Kootstra

Katherine Ryan is happy to break taboos. The comedienne, 41, who has two daughters and a son, admits: 'They say you're not supposed to have favourites, but I definitely love my oldest daughter more than anyone else in my family.'

The Canadian-born star of Channel 4 panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats has a three-year-old son and a 20-month-old daughter with civil partner Bobby Kootstra and a daughter from a previous relationship. She explains: 'I feel comfortable saying that – just because she had a decade head start on everyone else, and she's a witness to this metamorphosis that I had.

'I had some tricky relationships and was quite anxious, and I think I must have had really low self-esteem. Somehow I had enough of something to craft this career, and she was my inspiration. I had my most incredible adventures with her.'
