Earth Abides ends its six-episode run on a high note by featuring several emotional moments before leaving viewers with a memorable lesson. Unlike most post-apocalyptic movies and shows, Earth Abides takes a grounded and realistic approach to portraying humanity's life after a catastrophic event. It shows how long after a pandemic wipes out almost the entire human population, the remaining survivors find themselves at a crossroads where they can either resist change and attempt to rebuild civilization or let nature do its thing and adapt accordingly.

While most human characters in Earth Abides gradually settle into doing the latter, the protagonist, Ish, seeks certainty as he relies on books and knowledge to help humanity sustain itself. However, towards the ending moments of Earth Abides, Ish, too, learns to loosen his grip on control and accept the unpredictable nature of life. By highlighting Ish's cathartic journey, Earth Abides ends on a bittersweet note, featuring some shocking character deaths but also leaving with a profound message.

Who Ish Is With In Earth Abides' Ending Time Jump

The Closing Scene Features A 50-Year Time Jump

Alexander Ludwig as Ish in Earth Abides

Before the closing credits of Earth Abides' finale start rolling, the show features a 50-year time jump in which Ish walks in the wilderness with a young man. Proud of how far he and the survivors have come, Ish hands the man his hammer while explaining how, regardless of all the variables they face as humans, the only constant in their lives is that the Earth always abides. With this, the older version of Ish gives his responsibilities to the young man revealed to be Heather’s oldest son.

The gesture of Ish handing over his hammer to a new generation symbolizes how he is passing down all the lessons he learned during his time as the survivor group's leader.

While Ish reaches the end of his timeline, the show's closing scene establishes that a new generation of humans will continue to sustain themselves in the ever-changing world. The gesture of Ish handing over his hammer to a new generation symbolizes how he is passing down all the lessons he learned during his time as the survivor group's leader. At the same time, it also highlights how Ish is ready to accept his own departure while believing that the next generation will be able to carry the torch and thrive in the world he helped sustain.

Why Ish & The Survivors Move To Point Lobos In Earth Abides' Ending

They Follow Their Intuition

Ish always grew anxious when new survivors joined their community and worried that the involvement of new people would ruin what he and Emma built together. While he was initially wrong about many new additions to their community, his concerns about Charlie's involvement were right on the money. Despite previously being right about the motives of many new survivors in their group, Ish eventually understands that they are stronger in numbers. He realizes that humanity can only survive if they hold on to their faith and grow their community as big as they can.

Therefore, when the survivor from Point Lobos invites them to live with them, Ish cannot help but accept the offer. Ezra remains a little apprehensive about making the move, recalling how trusting Charlie led to disastrous consequences. However, he, too, eventually agrees when all others in the community show immense eagerness towards making the move. The final time jump in Earth Abides' ending proves that Ish and the crew's decision to move to Point Lobos benefitted them and improved their odds of surviving in their changing world.

Joey's Death & Its Impact On Ish Explained

Ish Initially Struggles To Find A Reason To Live

Elias Leacock as Joey in Earth Abides

After Joey's death, Ish starts to question everything he stands for. He struggles to find a reason to sustain humanity in the post-apocalyptic world and wonders if meeting other survivors was ever worth it. Infuriated by his son's demise and the sense of helplessness it dawns upon him, Ish even covers the massive notice Emma previously put out to attract more survivors to their place. However, the more he accepts his son's death, the more he realizes that he and the other survivors must let go of their desire to seek control.

Ish learns to embrace the fact that he found Emma after the pandemic when he was on the verge of believing that all humans had perished. At the same time, he also starts thinking in terms of decades instead of seeing the world through the narrow lens of immediate survival. He understands that more humans will die in their quest to survive and sustain, but that should never stop the survivors from continuing to rebuild.

Throughout the series, Ish relied on books because scientific facts and procedures gave him a sense of control. Towards the end of the Earth Abides episode, however, he learns to let go of control, allowing the planet to follow its natural course. This helps him manage the things he can control while relieving himself from the burden of dictating everything around him.

Meaning Of 147225 Explained

The Numbers Point Towards A Radio Frequency

Aleksandra Cross as Heather in Earth Abides

While recounting how Raif died, Heather reveals she and Raif often encountered the number "147225" written on walls and rocks. However, despite their best efforts to find out what it meant, they never truly understood its meaning. In Earth Abides' final moments, however, Ish connects the dots when Heather tells him about the numbers. He realizes that the numbers could be a radio frequency and enters them on the radio he built through the instructions in his son's journal. Everything falls into place when the radio signal connects them to a new set of survivors living in Point Lobos.

Why Kori Keeps Raif's Killer's Identity A Secret

He Understands The Consequences Of Telling The Truth

Silas attacks Kaif in Earth Abides' episode 6

When Heather tells Kori about the events surrounding Kaif's death, she mentions the killer had a tattoo of a flame on his arm. This makes Kori realize that the killer might have been Silas because his tattoo matched Heather's description. Although he initially considers telling Ish and the others about who might have killed Kaif, he realizes it would cause more harm than good. Ish decided to let Silas go when he supported Charlie and realized he was a threat to their community.

Silas had tried to convince him to let him stay by surrendering his knife. However, Ish stuck to his decision and returned his knife, claiming he would need it in the outside world. As Heather's story confirms, Silas eventually used the same knife to kill Kaif. If Kori told the truth about his discovery to Ish and the other survivors, Ish would hold himself accountable for the young man's death. Other people from the community would also inadvertently question Ish's leadership and past decisions. Therefore, to ensure all survivors stick together, Kori keeps the truth to himself.

The Real Meaning Of Earth Abides' Ending Explained

The Ending Serves As A Stark Reminder For Humanity

Ish's story in Earth Abides highlights how humans often believe they will sustain their species till the end of time. However, little do they realize that while humans and other species will come and go, the Earth will abide. Like most humans, Ish seeks control over his destiny and future, hoping all his children and family will live to see the world's future. However, after losing his son, Joey, he realizes he cannot control the cycles of life and death that dictate humanity's existence.

Since Earth Abides was marketed as a miniseries from the beginning, it will not be renewed for another season.

With this message, Earth Abides' ending features a montage that shows how even though the human population has dwindled after the pandemic, many other species of flora and fauna have thrived. What were once concrete jungles and massive cityscapes have turned into dense forests as nature reclaims its land. Based on Ish's final insights, Earth Abides' ending can be seen both as a warning and a reflection of the fragility of civilization and the beauty of nature's resilience and humanity's adaptability.
