Earth Abides ends its six-episode run on a high note by featuring several emotional moments before leaving viewers with a memorable lesson. Unlike most post-apocalyptic movies and shows, Earth Abides takes a grounded and realistic approach to portraying humanity's life after a catastrophic event. Ish always grew anxious when new survivors joined their community and worried that the involvement of new people would ruin what he and Emma built together. Despite previously being right about the motives of many new survivors in their group, Ish eventually understands that they are stronger in numbers. He realizes that humanity can only survive if they hold on to their faith and grow their community as big as they can.

Therefore, when the survivor from Point Lobos invites them to live with them, Ish cannot help but accept the offer. Ezra remains a little apprehensive about making the move, recalling how trusting Charlie led to disastrous consequences. However, he, too, eventually agrees when all others in the community show immense eagerness towards making the move. Ish Initially Struggles To Find A Reason To Live
After Joey's death, Ish starts to question everything he stands for. He struggles to find a reason to sustain humanity in the post-apocalyptic world and wonders if meeting other survivors was ever worth it. Infuriated by his son's demise and the sense of helplessness it dawns upon him, Ish even covers the massive notice Emma previously put out to attract more survivors to their place. However, the more he accepts his son's death, the more he realizes that he and the other survivors must let go of their desire to seek control.
Ish learns to embrace the fact that he found Emma after the pandemic when he was on the verge of believing that all humans had perished. At the same time, he also starts thinking in terms of decades instead of seeing the world through the narrow lens of immediate survival. He understands that more humans will die in their quest to survive and sustain, but that should never stop the survivors from continuing to rebuild.
Throughout the series, Ish relied on books because scientific facts and procedures gave him a sense of control. Towards the end of the Earth Abides episode, however, he learns to let go of control, allowing the planet to follow its natural course. While recounting how Raif died, Heather reveals she and Raif often encountered the number "147225" written on walls and rocks. However, despite their best efforts to find out what it meant, they never truly understood its meaning. He realizes that the numbers could be a radio frequency and enters them on the radio he built through the instructions in his son's journal. Silas had tried to convince him to let him stay by surrendering his knife. However, Ish stuck to his decision and returned his knife, claiming he would need it in the outside world. As Heather's story confirms, Silas eventually used the same knife to kill Kaif. If Kori told the truth about his discovery to Ish and the other survivors, Ish would hold himself accountable for the young man's death. The Ending Serves As A Stark Reminder For Humanity
Ish's story in Earth Abides highlights how humans often believe they will sustain their species till the end of time. However, little do they realize that while humans and other species will come and go, the Earth will abide. Like most humans, Ish seeks control over his destiny and future, hoping all his children and family will live to see the world's future. However, after losing his son, Joey, he realizes he cannot control the cycles of life and death that dictate humanity's existence.
