Warning! Spoilers ahead for Dutton Ranch episode 5, "Peaceful Find Peace."Dutton Ranch episode 5 is a roller coaster of highs and lows for Beth and Rip, as the show lays the groundwork for an intense power struggle. After kicking off the new era of Yellowstone on CBS via Luke Grimes' Marshals, John Dutton III's most loyal successors' story in Texas started several weeks later. In Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip found themselves starting a new life in Rio Paloma following a tragedy in Dillon, Montana that forced them to abandon their ideal farm.
The first four episodes of Dutton Ranch focused on world-building. Unlike Kayce's story in Marshals, which has an inherited environment from Yellowstone, considering that it remains to be set in Montana, Beth and Rip's narrative demanded an entirely new backdrop. This paved the way for the introduction of a spectrum of characters, including 10 Petal head honcho, Beulah Jackson, warm-hearted veterinarian, Everett McKinney, and J.R. Villareal's Azul Ramos. What has been clear, however, is that Beth and Rip have their work cut out for them, especially after dealing with one tragedy after another, if they want to have the ideal life in Texas. In "Peaceful Find Peace," the pair start their comeback, albeit in very different ways.
Carter Gets In More Trouble Than Necessary (But It Builds Dutton Ranch's Best New Story)
While Marshals struggle to make Tate relevant to its story, Dutton Ranch easily does this with Carter, which is odd, considering that he's technically not blood-related to his parents. The Paramount+ neo-Western has managed to carve a personal narrative for the character that is separate from what's happening in the larger story but connected enough to eventually play a part when storylines start to cross over. Carter's struggles continue in Dutton Ranch episode 5, as he keeps his distance from Beth and Rip. His act of rebellion, however, ends up in another big snafu, as he gets himself involved in the shady dealings of Sheriff Handy Wade and his precinct after they wrongfully killed Dwight.
Carter feeling out of place in Texas is totally understandable. He feels uncomfortable in school and keeping him out of his parents' ranch affairs exacerbates his sense of not belonging. That said, he has been in one too many incidents in Dutton Ranch thus far so that it might be better if Beth and Rip found out what's going on with him. In terms of storytelling, however, Carter's struggles is paving the way for the series' most compelling fresh plot, which is his budding romance with Oreana — Beulah's granddaughter and 10 Petal's supposed hair. The fact that he calls her before his parents after Wade let him go deepens their bond, as they have clearly crossed the line beyond just being attracted to each other.
Beth's Plan To Save Dutton Ranch & Take Down 10 Petal Is Genius
On the heels of Dutton Ranch's foot and mouth disease infection that wiped out their cattle and their dreams of being a major player in the industry, Beth and Rip had to make some major concessions in order to survive. With the help of Everett, Rip scores a job at 10 Petal after impressing Beulah, which would earn him $11,000 a month — enough for their expenses at home. Beth actually offered to go back to the workforce, but it would keep her away from her family, so it was vetoed by her husband. It's curious how much money they still have, as "Peaceful Find Peace" makes it look like they are really down on their luck.
While Rip makes an impression at 10 Petal, Beth starts working on her own scheme. Admittedly, it isn't clear what exactly she is figuring out when Zachariah interrupts her at first, but the pair struck a good rapport, and considering their standing in Rio Paloma, it is great to see the growing circle of allies the Dutton-Wheelers have in Texas. The reveal about Beth's plan doesn't happen until the final quarter of the episode, where she goes to Beulah and basically sells herself as her new fixer. The deal is that John III's daughter will help solidify 10 Petal into a legacy brand that will stand the test of time, giving its big boss a way out. She gets cut from the profit of the business, and after five years, she and Rip will be out of the company. Because Beth is great at selling an aspiration, Beulah agrees.
Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan Is Finally Telling The Yellowstone Story That Everyone Wants With Dutton Ranch
Kayce's Marshals is a hit, but it isn't the best Yellowstone story that needs to be told. Thankfully, Taylor Sheridan is finally doing it.
The biggest twist, however, comes at the very end of Dutton Ranch episode 5. Apparently, Beth's plan is to infiltrate 10 Petal and learn everything that there is to know about Beulah. While she has always been very good at getting what she wants, the fact that she is able to be more strategic with this move is impressive. In Yellowstone, Beth rarely hid her true feelings towards anyone. She went up against her foes with such ferociousness, and she always made it clear that she was coming for them. This time, however, Beth recognizes that she needs to be more conniving to get what she wants. Beulah is the bigger player in the league, so she can't take her down more straightforwardly.
Unbeknownst to her, Beulah is also making moves to protect herself from any kind of potential betrayal, telling Joaquin that she'll dig up dirt on the Duttons to have something over her new fixer. This paves the way for Dutton Ranch to bring back the unresolved cases from Yellowstone about John III's murder and Jamie's disappearance.
Rip Comes Clean About Wesley's Body (How It Impacts Dutton Ranch's Power Struggle)
Further complicating the situation is Rip finally coming clean about finding Wesley's body at their ranch. After spending a day with 10 Petal's people, he is able to connect the dots about the mystery that's clearly creating tension in the bunkhouse. Rip warns his wife when dealing with Beulah now that he knows what they are capable of. It's a great way to weave all previously separate storylines in Dutton Ranch as it gears up for its nearing finale. Whether this grand culmination happens in episode 9 is currently up in the air, but with a sophomore year looking very likely, there's always the chance that the Paramount+ show will save some of the reckoning for later.
