During the present-day L'Arca scenario in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, you'll have the opportunity to play a strange little mini-game in which you'll have to pick out the three most muscle-bound members of a troupe of humans disguised as animals. Adapted from a similar sidequest in the original Dragon Quest 7, this puzzle has stumped players for over 25 years.

That's because you're given no clues as to who's who: it's totally up to your own powers of observation and memory to figure out who among these barnyard creatures is the buffest. Here's how to complete the animal guessing game quickly, without too much frustration.

How To Start The Animal Guessing Game

Visit L'Arca (Present)

You can start the animal guessing game while visiting the L'Arca Region in the present. After collecting the proper fragments and completing the L'Arca scenario in the past, you'll unlock the present-day version of the island on the map. Travel to the region, then enter the town of the same name.

Once there, head for the large house next to the barn where you first met Ruff. Head inside, and talk to the mayor, who'll explain that the town is in the midst of a festival where all its residents dress up as animals and parade through the streets. He'll offer you some animal costumes of your own, which you can pick up by searching the nearby drawer.

Do so, then head outside and walk towards the town's south entrance to see a group of animal NPCs lined up in preparation for the festivities. Speak to the one human NPC located nearby (see above) to commence the animal guessing game.

How To Solve The Puzzle

The gist of the animal guessing game is as follows: six animals stand before you. Three of them are buff, three of them are less so. You have to pick out the three buff ones without making any mistakes. If you accidentally pick another one, you'll have to start over, but you can retry this mini-game as many times as you like without incurring any penalties.

As far as I can tell, there's no real trick to this puzzle other than trial and error. You're meant to just keep speaking with the animals until you identify the correct choices, and remember who they are between rounds. It's not difficult, but it can be annoyingly repetitive. So, if you want to solve the animal guessing game quickly, the correct choices are below:

Leftmost cow (#1)
Horse (#3)
Dog (#5)

Choose those three NPCs without choosing anyone else, and you'll win the guessing game. The reward is a Ruby of Protection, an accessory that boosts your defense by 20 points. You can equip it to any of your party members in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, either boosting Maribel's relatively low defense, or making the Hero, Kiefer, of Ruff tankier than before.
