Dragon Ball Meets Demon Slayer In Stylish New Co-Op Anime Action Game

Growing up, the PlayStation platform was a reliable source of action entertainment pretty much all the time. The PlayStation 2 is arguably one of the biggest action machines of all time, providing countless games to play and challenge yourself with. That tradition has since extended to other platforms beyond PlayStation, but the PS5 is still very much a pro-action console.

Take this particular PS5 game, just unveiled on the official PlayStation Blog. It mixes a ton of different anime influences, aiming to synthesize them with multiplayer-oriented action. While it's still a way out, this is one project that you'll definitely want to keep on your radar.

Demon Slayer + Dragon Ball? I'm In

Unseen, the Tokyo-based studio helmed by Ikumi Nakamura, has officially unveiled Kemuri, which is coming in 2027 on PlayStation 5. No other platforms are announced at this time.

If Ikumi Nakamura sounds familiar, that's because she probably is if you follow the gaming industry. She worked at Tango Gameworks on The Evil Within series and Ghostwire: Tokyo before forming her own studio called Unseen. That studio is working on Kemuri, which was first revealed three years ago at The Game Awards.

I'm already on board with the idea of Kemuri: "Kemuri is a yokai-possession action game set in the chaotic world of Kemuri City, where life and death coexist. Players will confront the paranormal as they explore a sprawling vertical city, traversing rooftops, back alleys, and hidden ruins alone or in online co-op with up to two other players."

In Kemuri City, it's considered the "closest thing to the afterlife." You'll travel across a city that's considered an "unusual tourist destination," while you meet and interact with yokai. As a yokai hunter, you'll form contracts with them, use their powers, and adopt different playstyles, like ranged magic casting and close combat.

That includes exploring the physical representation of Kemuri City, as well as the "hidden fractures" of the world that lead into the yokai realm. A huge part of Kemuri is that, by interacting with yokai over time, you'll eventually learn more and more about them and adopt their aesthetics, blurring the line between the living and the dead.

So far, fans have noted multiple projects that it's reminiscent of, including Sunset Overdrive meets K-POP Demon Hunters, as well as Jujutsu Kaisen. While those influences are apparent, Kemuri is also sporting a unique style of its own.

Kemuri Is Still A While Away

Perhaps the best part of Kemuri is that you can play completely solo or with friends. If you're so inclined, you can go on the adventure by yourself, or join in with up to two other people online (PlayStation Plus is required, by the way). I'm just happy that solo play is a given, as it's not always the case.

The PlayStation 5 is getting quite a few unique-looking games like this as we venture further into this console generation, always wondering when Sony is going to debut the PlayStation 6. For now, there are tons of action games to peruse.
