There's so much equipment to loot or buy in Dragon Age: The Veilguard in the form of armor, weapons, and accessories with special, unlockable abilities that can be accessed as Rook trades the Caretaker for upgrades. Equipment in Dragon Age: The Veilguard can be found or purchased, but not crafted. However, once Rook recruits Bellara, and she repairs the Eluvian on the lower level of the Lighthouse, granting access to The Crossroads, Rook can meet the Caretaker, who can help outfit them for battle with both faction enemies and blighted gods.
Gear upgrades in Dragon Age: The Veilguard increase an item's stats and unlock special additional abilities. This is true not only for Rook's gear, but for their companions' items as well. Gear can also be enchanted to apply additional, custom effects to equipment that should fit any playstyle. To make these upgrades, Rook will need to visit - and upgrade - the Caretaker's Workshop.
How to Upgrade Gear
Visit The Caretaker At The Workshop
At the Lighthouse, outside the library, Rook can find the Workshop below the giant wolf statue. The Caretaker will appear here when called upon and can help Rook upgrade their team's gear. In general, Rook can upgrade every item in their inventory one time per Workshop level, provided they have enough materials to do so.

Does Dragon Age: The Veilguard Have New Game Plus?
While Dragon Age: The Veilguard is ready to impress, many players may be interested in whether it has New Game Plus after finishing the story.
Players can select items via the Upgrade menu in the workshop. These can be sorted by what Rook and each companion are currently wearing or what each character has in their inventory by category. They can review what the upgrade will do, then, provided they have all the proper materials to trade for it, select Level Up.
Gather Materials
Gear upgrades in Dragon Age: The Veilguard cost resources Rook can gather while exploring. These resources can be common and easy to find or loot, like Heartwood, Imperial Weave, Flawless Crystals, and Ore, or more rare, often discoverable in locations touched by Fade magic. Each piece of gear costs different materials to upgrade, so players will need to check the menu at the Workshop to make sure they have what they need to complete the upgrade. Additionally, higher-level upgrades will cost more or rarer materials.
Players can either forage or loot resources, or they can sometimes purchase them from Merchants. Farming a lot of resources is generally a good idea because Faction Merchants also require these for shop upgrades.
One way to gather a lot of materials and Gold quickly in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is to have Rook roll or Fade Step through crates, barrels, vases, and other breakable items they come across.
Find Duplicate Items
For gear without the Unique rarity distinction, players can often find duplicates either being sold by Merchants or in lootable chests and backpacks. Each duplicate item found acts as an upgrade and increases the gear's rarity level by one.
How to Upgrade the Workshop
Increase The Caretaker's Power
To unlock the ability to upgrade gear to higher levels in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Rook will also need to upgrade the Workshop. This can be done by increasing the Caretaker's power. The Caretaker's power is tied to collectibles found throughout Thedas called Mementos. Often there is some faction or regional lore via codex entry associated with each of these items, and they can be bought from Merchants, as well as discovered and looted while exploring.
Once Rook has collected enough Mementos, a pop-up will appear saying the Caretaker's power can be upgraded. Upon returning to the Lighthouse, Rook will need to visit the Workshop and on the right side of the Menu select Rank Up. They can then upgrade their gear, and companions' gear, to higher levels.

Early previews of Dragon Age: The Veilguard are leaving good impressions - but how exactly does the game's overhauled combat system work?
Trading Mementos to upgrade the Workshop also unlocks the ability to apply Enchantments to items. There are a few basic Enchantments to choose from at the start, but with each rank up to the Workshop, more Enchantments can be applied. To access these, players can select Enchant from the Workshop menu.
Once Rook completes the statue puzzle and unlocks the secret Library passage in the Lighthouse, they can access the balcony. Here, they will have the option to repair the Astrolabe, which also increases the Caretaker's power. This grants a permanent discount on upgrades at the Workshop for the remainder of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
