Backtracking on certain missions is a great idea, especially missions that involve a new Gadget that you are using for the first time. These are typically used in the same vicinity where they are found and will sometimes lead to Tadpoles, Badges, or even secret doors. In terms of bosses, it's generally better to defeat a boss and take a few hits in order to learn the move set and different tricks that are required to take each one down. After seeing how a boss's attacks land and which Supa Buddy/Gadget is needed, you will have a much easier time not getting hit.
