It’s hard to think about the earliest years of the Doctor Who revival without Billie Piper coming to mind. Her character, Rose Tyler, was the Ninth Doctor’s companion for the entirety of his one-season tenure. She then traveled with the Tenth Doctor for his first season, and made guest appearances during his third season and his final episode as the show’s lead. Piper also appeared in the 50th anniversary special, “The Day of The Doctor,” as The Moment’s interface, which had taken on Rose's appearance.
For all the weird things that Doctor Who fans saw Rose go through, arguably none of it compared to the bizarre way Piper made her grand return to the show in 2025. At the end of the Doctor Who season 15 finale, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into a form resembling Rose, with the character greeting viewers with an excited “Oh, hello!” It was the final surprise in an episode packed with strange twists and turns.
Until earlier this week, it was expected that the Piper twist would be explained in a Christmas special at the end of this year. However, it’s since been announced that not only has said special been scrapped, but that Doctor Who is going on hiatus and has been put up for competitive tender following showrunner Russell T. Davies and producer Bad Wolf’s exit. So now, this new update has made the Piper twist even worse than it had already been received.
The Odds Are Low That Doctor Who Can Effectively Resolve Its Billie Piper Twist
“The Reality War” earned mixed critical reception for a variety of reasons, and the Piper tag was chief among them. Not only did it feel random even by surprise cameo standards, but it still hasn’t been clarified who Piper was playing in that final moment. The logical deduction given the presentation is that the Sixteenth Doctor simply looks like Rose, but Piper’s credit didn’t come with a character name.
As such, it’s possible that the actor is reprising Rose. Perhaps she figured out how to travel from the parallel universe where she’s been living back to her home reality, then somehow take over The Doctor’s body. Maybe Piper is instead playing a brand-new character again. Any of these explanations are going to be convoluted to some degree, and the odds are low that whatever is chosen will satisfy most, if not all, Doctor Who fans.
This becomes a bigger problem given Doctor Who’s unfocused future. It was one thing when fans knew some kind of answer was forthcoming by the end of the year. Now, it’s been reported that Doctor Who may not return until 2028 at the earliest, as the BBC is searching for a new production company to collaborate with on the show. That’s a lot more time for expectations to grow regarding how the Piper twist will be resolved, and it’s doubtful, but not impossible, the payoff will be worth it.
Doctor Who Could Skip Past The Piper Twist Altogether

What makes the Piper twist even more frustrating is that an official explanation for it hasn’t even been figured out behind the scenes. Though Davies said in February that he’d written “multiple drafts” of the 2026 Christmas special, he walked that back in his social media post saying goodbye to Doctor Who (again). This time around, he wrote that, “For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor.”
So, whoever succeeds Davies as Doctor Who’s next showrunner will have to solve this mystery with their own writing team… or maybe not. It’s also possible that when Doctor Who returns, Piper won’t be anywhere near it. Taking a page from when the show was revived in 2005 and decided to spotlight the Ninth Doctor instead of the Eighth, maybe a new Doctor will once again be introduced right off the bat. That way, Doctor Who gets another fresh start and doesn’t confuse new viewers.
While that approach would certainly be less messy, the Piper tease is arguably too massive a plot thread to not acknowledge again. At least when the original Doctor Who series concluded in 1989, as well as when the Doctor Who TV movie wrapped up in 1996, the Seventh and Eighth Doctors weren’t in any cliffhanger situations. If the Piper twist goes unaddressed when Doctor Who returns, that’s surely going to upset a sizable portion of the fanbase.

A third possibility is that the Piper twist will eventually be explained, but not on the Doctor Who TV show. The franchise also comprises novels, comic books, audio dramas, and video games. This supplemental material not only allows fans to have more adventures with their favorite Doctors long after their time on TV has ended, but also follows along with various kinds of characters in spinoff adventures.
This might be the best-case scenario for how to handle the immediate aftermath of the Fifteenth Doctor’s regeneration, particularly if it’s covered as a Big Finish audio production. Piper already has experience with this corner of the Doctor Who media space through Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures, Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon, and Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures. Presumably, she’d be willing to lend her vocal talents to another one of these projects.
Regardless of the medium, going down this creative route allows for the mystery surrounding the Piper twist to be solved, while the TV show can move on to new horizons. It would be similar to how the Eighth Doctor was able to have more adventures after the plan for him to lead his own TV series fell through. As another example, the Big Finish production Missy explained how Sacha Dawan's Master existed and reverted to his villainous ways, despite how Michelle Gomez’s Missy had gone through a redemptive arc and seemingly been killed for good.
Doctor Who is entering another period of uncertainty, with some already comparing it to the Wilderness Years, i.e. when the TV show was off the air from 1989 to 2005. As a result, the polarizing Piper twist has become an even bigger anchor weighing it down, and it will be a daunting task bringing this to a satisfying conclusion.
