James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

There's no doubt that the Doctor Who series is going through a time of major transition right now, with the BBC deciding that a major reshuffle is needed to ensure its success moving forward. In the first instance, the traditional Christmas special has been cancelled, and long-time showrunner Russell T. Davies has stepped back from his role on a permanent basis.

At the same time, Bad Wolf Productions have also departed, and the future of the series is being put out to a competitive tender process to find new independent production partners. All of that means it will likely be a while before we get any new episodes, meaning you'll likely be looking for something to do in the meantime to keep the story going.

Happily, there is an option out there that you can try right now, and it draws in several Doctors from the past to keep things exciting.

Over on the Eastside Games website, you should be able to find the page for Doctor Who: Lost In Time, a new idle game where you explore space and time to pick-up enough energy to save the universe, just as the Time Lord himself would have wanted. In letting fans know a little about what they can expect from the game, the developer shared the following insight:

"As the Doctor you will visit different classic locations in the franchise, encounter companions and oppose dastardly plans of the Daleks, the Cybermen and more. Get new characters to help you by collecting cards and level them up using Vortex Energy, Kyfred Gems and Henoch Matter.

"All these resources are key to overcoming all the obstacles in your way. Get Kerblam Boxes shipped to you when you complete a task and obtain your rewards. Be ready to jump into the TARDIS at any given moment and tap your screen to fix it so you can travel to your next Adventure as quickly as possible.

"Uncover a conspiracy across time and space trying to destroy the Doctor. Embark in an original story involving several Doctors and Companions through classic locations of the franchise, facing infamous enemies with new plots."

Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor in Doctor Who season 1

Even better than that, the game is available totally for free on Android and Apple devices, meaning that if you don't end up enjoying it for some reason, then you aren't out of pocket. Otherwise, it's going to be a case of sitting tight and waiting to hear more about what's next for the beloved sci-fi series, and it would be a huge shame if Doctor Who wasn't back in earnest before too long.
