With the Pokémon TCG Pocket now available and the chase for cards beginning, is there a trick to finding rare cards with backward packs? Pocket is The Pokémon Company's newest attempt to integrate the TCG into more forms. This form is a purely digital source that, while it has microtransactions, has largely proven to be free-to-play so far. So far, the success of the game has been shown, having easily crossed ten million downloads in the first few days.
Packs in Pocket work by refreshing every 12 hours, with the hourglass item being able to reduce this by one hour each. Currently, each of the three packs of Genetic Apex - Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu - have different rates of offering different cards. Each pack contains five cards, and each card slot also has different rates for rarity. Opening packs also give a currency that can then be used to redeem a card of the player's choice.
Are Pokémon TCG Pocket's Backwards Packs Worth Choosing?
There's No Evidence Backwards Packs Have Better Pulls
Over the first few days, there has been a theory that if a pack is facing backward when the roll of options appears, it will have the rarer and stronger Genetic Apex cards. It's been a source of discussion on social media and places like Reddit. This has lead to some players prioritizing these pulls over others.
However, this is untrue and there has been no concrete evidence to prove backwards packs have better cards. The other trick that has been floating around is whether a pack with a bent corner has increased odds for rare cards. There has been slightly more evidence for this, but not enough to prove anything. This means that all packs have the same rates whether facing backward or having a different design.
Backwards Packs Continue Luck-Based Traditions From The Real-World TCG
Is This A Real Trick Or Just A Tradition?
These new ideas continue the long-running superstitious traditions of the Pokémon TCG. Given how luck-based this hobby is, only certain products guarantee rare cards, players have always created little rituals to try and enhance this luck. This could be by opening packs a certain way, only purchasing those that are in certain positions, or even those that are hidden away. Though realistically all of these do very little, it adds another layer of excitement and mythos to the TCG.

How Battles Work In Pokémon TCG Pocket
Battles are one of the most enjoyable aspects of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, and they are the best way to obtain the great rewards.
In a situation like this where everything is digital and seemingly more buttoned up, it makes sense that differences would stand out. Especially in the case where a backward or bent pack is not in every rotation. So, while it is amazing that more of these traditions are entering the game, they hold little power over card odds as of now.
Overall, even without any tricks and using essential beginner tips, Pocket has everything it needs to be successful. The important part now is the title having consistent updates that keep players engaged and content fresh. About finding rare cards, there may be some trick out there that hasn't been found yet or may be added in the future. However, as of now, there is no evidence that backward packs have rarer cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket.
