While 2026 has offered up several unexpected blockbusters — look no further than the summer's two horror breakouts, Obsession and Backrooms — there have been a handful of underperformers as well. Amazon MGM released the blockbuster Project Hail Mary, but the studio also watched Masters of the Universe crash and burn with less than $120 million worldwide against a reported budget of $175 million. Warner Bros. has had a notoriously difficult year, with major flops such as Supergirl drawing intense negative buzz after grossing around $125 million worldwide against a reported budget of more than $180 million. More recently, the studio's ambitious political satire Digger emerged as one of the biggest bombs of all time, with a projected final haul of under $50 million against a reported budget of $180 million. And then there's Disney. The studio had two massive underperformers this year, one of which has already failed to redeem itself on streaming. Now, it's the other film's turn to try and save face.

The movie in question made its Disney+ debut recently, several weeks after The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Star Wars spin-off grossed less than $350 million worldwide against a reported budget of $160 million, emerging as the franchise's lowest-grossing live-action installment, and the lowest-grossing movie after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. But guess what, Disney had a bigger underperformer in its future. Released two months after The Mandalorian and Grogu, the movie cost a reported $250 million to produce, but grossed only around $325 million globally.

Disney's Mega-Budget Box-Office Bomb Continued Dwayne Johnson's Spiral

We're talking, of course, about the live-action Moana remake. The movie continued Dwayne Johnson's box-office spiral, after the mega-budget films Jungle Cruise, Black Adam, and Red One, and his unexpected Oscars play, The Smashing Machine. Johnson will hope to bounce back with this December's Jumanji: Open World, which has curiously been slated to release one week after Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday. Moana, directed by Thomas Kail, received poor reviews from critics and fell short of both the original 2016 film's haul and last year's Moana 2. It now holds a 33% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, like several of Johnson's recent movies, it has been given an encouraging audience score on the aggregator website. According to FlixPatrol, Moana took the number-one spot on the global Disney+ leaderboard following its streaming debut this week. Stay tuned to Collider to find out how long it's able to sustain this level.
