It is always great when a new free game launches on Steam, as it gives those of us who've either spent all their money on a recent sale, or simply can't afford the latest games releasing, a chance to still try out something new and build up our libraries. Steam is absolutely packed with free titles, many of which are actually worth the little effort required to download them, and they seemingly get better and better with time, with those launching today offering an abundance of content for literally no cost.

Most recently, a game that seeks to blend the engrossing nature of Slay the Spire's roguelike gameplay with the very best elements of Diablo, has dropped onto Steam for free. It offers potentially tens, if not hundreds of hours of gameplay and literally won't set you back a single cent. There's no catch here, no hidden microtransactions, no secret costs; it is 100% free, and, better still, set to become one of the best free games on Steam.

Diablo Fans Should Check Out This Steam Freebie

The latest free Steam game to hit the storefront is Guildrun, an autobattler roguelike that has already amassed a slew of extremely positive reviews, garnering it a Very Positive rating. Guildrun brings together the very best elements of Slay the Spire and Diablo, melding the isometric, effects heavy combat and aesthetic of Diablo 3 especially with the strategic, captivating gameplay loop and in-depth progression systems of Slay the Spire.

This is just the demo for Guildrun, but don't let that stop you from downloading it today. The amount of content packed into this completely free, single-player demo, is absolutely astounding. This isn't a mere taste of the game, but practically an Early Access release, with it featuring 25 heroes, 180 specializations, 300+ relics and 100+ items. That's not to mention that each of the 25 heroes also comes with their own unique spec paths, allowing you to completely customize their build, making each run feel totally unique.

There are also eight difficulty settings, which only further adds to the replayability, as well as plans for weekly updates.

This certainly isn't the first highly-rated content-filled free Steam game, but it is one of the more impressive titles released in recent memory. Of course, you have to enjoy autobattler roguelikes to really get stuck into it, as well as a Slay the Spire approach to roguelike design and the aforementioned Diablo-esque traits. However, should all of that appeal to you, then there's really no reason not to jump over to its Steam store page and download it. At the very least, it'll keep you occupied until Guildrun's official release date.

Guildrun's Full Release Date Is Still TBA

The player positioning their characters in Guildrun.

While players basically get an entire game with Guildrun's free demo, the actual full release is still quite a way off. The game doesn't have an official release date, with Guildrun's developer, Leyline, still yet to announce it. The plan is for Guildrun to release sometime in 2027, so fans still have potentially a year or more to wait for the full game. However, considering how transparent Leyline has been, and how it built the currently available demo alongside its community, fans can expect to be told about the full release date when it is ready.

Until then, this huge, free Diablo-esque demo should serve as a perfect distraction. As aforementioned, this truly is one of the most generous free games on Steam in terms of quality, and experiences like it shouldn't be overlooked merely for being a demo rather than a full release. If anything, the sheer amount of content currently available should serve as a testament to just how big Guildrun will be when it eventually releases into 1.0 on Steam in 2027.
