Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 2, episode 1.The timeline of the entire Dexter franchise has changed in the first episode of Dexter: Resurrection season 2; here's how long has passed and what Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan has been up to. For most of the franchise's history, the Dexter timeline has mostly synced up with the real world. The original Dexter took place from 2006 to 2012, when the show was airing new seasons, and Dexter: New Blood also took place in 2021, when the limited series premiered.
There were, however, a few exceptions. The prequel series Dexter: Original Sin obviously took place years before it was released, in 1991. Additionally, though Dexter: Resurrection season 1 premiered in 2025, it took place in 2022. Now, Resurrection season 2 has introduced a time jump between seasons, updating the franchise's timeline and bringing it more in line with the real world.
Any time a show introduces a time jump, it raises natural questions of how long has passed and what happened between seasons, and Dexter: Resurrection is no different. After all, even just a single year in Dexter Morgan's life can be very eventful and feature multiple murders. The franchise's last time jump, in New Blood, also changed quite a bit about the show. Luckily, Resurrection's time jump isn't nearly as long, and we have a very good idea of what Dexter has been doing.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Takes Place About 3 Years After Season 1
ParamountHarrison Morgan is the key to explaining how long the time jump in Dexter: Resurrection season 2 was. Harrison was about 18 years old in Resurrection season 1, and he outright says that he's now 21 in Resurrection season 2, meaning three years have passed between seasons. In the premiere, Harrison mentions that he can legally drink and that he spent six months at the NYPD police academy, accounting for the time jump.
Additionally, since Resurrection season 1 was a direct continuation from the ending of Dexter: New Blood, that confirms Harrison was about 18 in the first season. New Blood also took place at the end of 2021, meaning Resurrection likely ran through early 2022. Using Harrison's age, it's safe to say that Resurrection season 2 now takes place in 2025. That also means Dexter is about 55 years old and starting to feel the effects of aging.
What Happened During Dexter: Resurrection’s Time Jump
Matt Infante/Paramount+Luckily, though the majority of it wasn't shown, Dexter: Resurrection gave viewers a good idea of what happened in the three-year time jump between seasons. Dexter himself gives the audience a brief recap of what he's been up to. As he explained, Dexter tracked down and killed two of the serial killers that Leon Prater had files for: the Midnight Mangler in Seattle and the Yonkers Slayer in New York.
Dexter killed five people in total in Resurrection season 1, and in the premiere of season 2, he mentions that he now has 13 blood slides in total. That means Dexter killed an additional eight people in the three years between seasons, including the two serial killers from Prater's files. Those six unnamed blood slides likely belonged to non-serial killers Dexter tracked down, like the vast majority of his victims in the original series. He also sold his cabin in Iron Lake, as he told Harrison.

Harrison also briefly mentions what he has been up to. He had to earn at least 24 college credits to enter the NYPD police academy, and given he was likely working part-time throughout his college career, that easily accounts for two years. He then spent another six months in the police academy, bringing him to 2025. Harrison also offhandedly mentioned that he broke up with Gigi, a criminology major and his love interest from season 1.
Resurrection season 2 even gave an update on Claudette and Oliva, the two NYPD detectives. They've spent the three years between seasons trying to build a case against Don Framt, aka the New York Ripper, whom they discovered through one of the files Dexter left behind in Prater's vault. Framt's lawyer also claimed they had brought him in for questioning multiple times, yet they haven't found any hard evidence to charge him with any murders yet. For now, that's all Dexter: Resurrection has revealed about the three-year time jump.
