Despite its numerous alterations to the source material, Netflix's Devil May Cry successfully turns the long-running video game franchise into a high-octane animated series, blending intense action with arcane supernatural lore and an unrivaled soundtrack. Devil May Cry season 2 picks up not long after Lady's betrayal, but a sudden appearance from long-lost brother Vergil is enough to stir Dante from his enforced slumber.
Across Netflix's new eight-episode run, Dante and Vergil somewhat settle their differences, realizing Mundus was really responsible for their mother's death, but also unmasking Argosax as an even more troublesome threat. Devil May Cry's tense season 2 finale sees the brothers pit villain against villain, removing Argosax from the playing field by allowing Mundus to vanquish his old rival. Unfortunately, Dante and Vergil disagree on where to go from there, with the former keen to retreat and face Mundus on their own terms, but the latter smelling revenge.
Agreeing on the point that Mundus cannot be allowed to invade the human realm, but knowing his brother would never abandon him willingly, Vergil incapacitates Dante and tosses him through the portal along with Sparda's amulet. A bloody Dante awakens in decimated city ruins, knowing the "sapiens" are safe for the time being, but left to ponder what comes next. As he does so, Lady is riding straight toward a villain that looks destined to become a major focus in Devil May Cry season 3.
The Jester's Secret Identity In Devil May Cry Season 2 Explained
Throughout Devil May Cry's second season, the series teased and hinted that the mysterious Jester in Mundus' court had a deeper relevance to the plot. The jokester had already been strongly suggested as the mole secretly feeding information back to Darkcom, but that clearly wasn't the whole story. At the same time, Devil May Cry also played coy over Lady's past. Despite the character previously claiming her parents were killed long ago, flashback scenes only ever showed the mother's death, never the father's.
And so it turns out that the Jester is, in fact, Lady's father. As if the heterochromia didn't give it away. Arkham transformed himself into a demon as part of his research into how to defeat them, ate his wife, then apparently disappeared and left his young daughter to assume she'd been tragically orphaned. Piecing together the information provided by Devil May Cry's ending, it appears that Arkham's anti-demon sentiments led to an alliance with Darkcom. Arkham then suggested the company recruit his own daughter, who had become a menace against demons in her own right by that point.
Making the most of his demonic transformation, Arkham played his role as the spy in Darkcom's operation. Given that Arkham's motivation in joining Darkcom would have been the total eradication of demonkind, it seems unlikely that he knew Arius ultimately planned on resurrecting yet another demon king in Argosax. Still, that's a question Devil May Cry season 3 can answer, in addition to why Arkham conspired to have his own daughter become a Darkcom agent.
Why Lady Doesn't Wait For Dante In The Diner
Devil May Cry really is playing the long game with Dante and Lady. Their relationship took one step forward after a passionate just-survived-certain-death kiss, then two steps back as the Sparda bros battled to prevent Argosax casting chaos over the human world. Dante is evidently ready to end this will-they-won't-they dance, pleading with Lady to reunite with him in the diner after the fight. She doesn't, of course, and instead leaves a letter explaining why they cannot be together.
Lady is, as the experts of Married at First Sight would undoubtedly say, in self-sabotage mode here. Still carrying the trauma of her past as a driving motivation, and now doubly troubled by the recent revelation that Darkcom were the bad guys all along, Lady views herself as incapable (even unworthy) of love and happiness with Dante. It's just as Dante himself explains to Vergil before their separation: chasing vengeance only made the dark cloud above his head bigger. Lady still hasn't realized this, and believes the path to peace is taking revenge against her demonic father.
It's a curious thing that, despite being in love with Dante, Lady is eerily similar to Vergil. Just as the blue half of Sparda's spawn is blinded by his need to kill Mundus and spurns a chance at reforging a sibling bond with Dante, Lady sees the continuation of her bloody rampage as the only path forward.
Dante & Lady Are Heading For The Same Destination In Devil May Cry Season 3
While Dante and Lady will be taking separate paths in Devil May Cry season 3, their eventual destinations look to be the same. Lady's mission to find the Jester more than likely means a trip to Makai, where the Jester may or may not still be languishing as a member of Mundus' court. Even if he quits his duties in the wake of Darkcom's downfall, Makai would be the most logical place for the Jester to hide, given his obvious inability to control when he transforms.
Dante's destiny also points toward Makai. As the hero lies battered and broken in a pile of rubble, a final voiceover in Devil May Cry season 2's ending confirms Dante's next mission is saving Vergil from self-destruction. Before that, however, Dante will almost certainly need a power-up, having already admitted to Vergil that they each lack the strength to overthrow Mundus in their current forms. Once Dante gets a firmer finger on his Devil Trigger, a trip to Makai for a rematch against Vergil is almost certainly on the cards. And Lady will be dueling against the Jester in the very next chamber.
Vergil Vs. Mundus: Who Wins?
Devil May Cry season 2 ends with Vergil and Mundus clashing swords, but avoids giving any hint as to who wins. Both demons seek to reign over Makai and lead an invasion of the human world, but all indications point toward Mundus standing tall when the dust settles. The very reason Dante and Vergil push Argosax into Mundus' path is because they're unable to vanquish the God of Chaos themselves, and Mundus duly obliges. But if Vergil couldn't beat Argosax, even with Dante's assistance, and Mundus could, Vergil must logically have as much chance of beating Mundus as Sparda does of winning "father of the year."
Viewers can reasonably anticipate that Devil May Cry season 3 will begin with Mundus still in charge of Makai, and Vergil locked up in a cell, expected to rediscover his loyalty.
Humanity would prefer Vergil to lead the demons, being a more magnanimous leader than the tyrant Mundus. And yet the sapiens would rather not be invaded at all. But that brings to the fore a problem Devil May Cry is yet to properly grapple with: Makai is an unlivable realm where innocent demon families are suffering. Whether it be Dante, Vergil, or another character entirely, someone needs to hammer out a peaceful arrangement between the humans and the demons without resorting to all-out war.
