Despite Warnings, Minecraft Moviegoers Are Now Bringing Actual Chickens to Theaters

5 days ago 11

Just when you thought it was safe to watch A Minecraft Movie after cinemas issued new rules cautioning audiences against being disruptive in the name of social media trends, the Chicken Jockey phenomenon has taken a distressing new turn.

A post on X from Discussing Film shared a video (that has of course gone viral) where someone brought an actual chicken to a Minecraft screening. Not only are young fans raining popcorn and junk all over auditoriums to celebrate the hit video game adaptation, now they’re bringing casual animal cruelty into it.

Rowdy screenings are not a new trend—there have long been audience-participation-encouraged screenings of films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room (spoons!), and more recently theaters added Wicked sing-along shows to accommodate aspiring Elphabas and Glindas. But introducing live animals into the mix is definitely taking things to a whole new level.

Silence is the golden rule, agreed upon with a ticket sale unless noted otherwise, and chickens are usually not therapy pets. And it doesn’t have to be this way—we shouldn’t gatekeep Minecraft fans from expressing their fandom, but they also shouldn’t abuse the sacred movie-theater space by making such a commotion that it turns off the rest of the crowd and makes theater employees’ lives hell. Do they not realize they could end up needing that job sweeping popcorn in this expensive egg economy? Someone needs to get Jack Black to do a Nicole Kidman-style ad reminding Minecraft fans that “real chickens don’t belong in a place like this.”
