The upcoming Hulu and Onyx Collective series “Deli Boys” offers a new twist on the classic rags-to-riches narrative.
The show, which is developed by Jenni Konner and Nora Silver under the eponymous Jenni Konner Productions banner, centers on two brothers who realize their late father was a secret crime lord.
The official synopsis reads: “When their convenience store-magnate father suddenly dies, a pair of pampered Pakistani American brothers lose everything and are forced to reckon with their Baba’s secret life of crime as they attempt to take up his mantle in the underworld.”
Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh play the central siblings, with Poorna Jagannathan, Alfie Fuller, and Brian George also starring. “Queer Eye” cast member Tan France makes his acting debut as a British Pakistani South London gang leader who is described as smart, intimidating, and dressed to kill.
The show is set in Philadelphia.
The half-hour, 10-episode series was created by Abdullah Saeed and developed by Konner and Silver. Konner previously developed “Girls” and recently produced “Nobody Wants This.” She will be the showrunner for Season 2 of the hit Netflix rom-com.
Michelle Nader is the “Deli Boys” showrunner and executive produces alongside Saeed, Konner, and Silver. The show premiered at Sundance, with the cast teasing that each episode will be vastly different from the next.
That could also in part be due to different directors for each installment. “Late Night” and “Freakier Friday” director Nisha Ganatra executive produces and directs the pilot, with Vali Chandrasekaran as a non-writing executive producer on the pilot. The series hails from Onyx Collective and is produced by 20th Television.
Ganatra is also directing the upcoming “Freaky Friday” sequel with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan returning in their respective roles from the 2003 movie. “Freaky Friday” first followed a mom (Curtis) who swaps bodies with her angsty teen daughter (Lohan); along the way, they learn to empathize with one another. The sequel is rumored to be about a swap between three generations, with Lohan’s onscreen daughter also involved.
“Deli Boys” premieres March 6 on Hulu. Check out the trailer below.
