Inko hugs Deku who is crying

My Hero Academia's story focuses heavily on the U.A. High students, but fans often wonder about these aspiring heroes' families. Some parents, like Todoroki's father, Endeavor, are unfortunately cruel and disrespectful to their children, but others show their children unwavering love and support, no matter what. One such admirable parent is Inko Midoriya, Deku's mother, who has wholeheartedly cheered him on throughout his hero journey, even during the most difficult, stressful, and even life-threatening moments.

In season three of My Hero Academia, following U.A. High student Bakugo’s terrifying kidnapping by the League of Villains, it was decided that it would be safer for the school's students to live on campus in protected dormitories. The U.A. teachers visited students' homes to inform their parents of the plan, but not everyone was receptive to this idea. Deku’s mother, Inko Midoriya, was not on board with Deku moving at all. When All Might, the one who gave Deku his Quirk, came to speak with her, she was very against the idea, telling All Might she would not allow Deku to go.

All Might’s Controversial Conversation With Inko Actually Proves Her Love for Deku

Inko Feared for Her Only Child’s Life, Explaining Why She Was Terrified To Send Him Back to U.A. High

Inko worried for Deku after one of his multiple fights in the series.

The conversation between Inko and All Might in season three, episode 12, "End of the Beginning, Beginning of the End," was controversial because of Inko’s initial refusal. Not only did she not give Deku permission to move into U.A.'s new dorms, she also threatened to pull him from U.A. High completely because of the injuries Deku sustained protecting Kota from the villain, Muscular, at training camp, and rescuing Bakugo from the League of Villains and All For One. Many fans were frustrated and confused by Inko's choice, but it makes perfect sense and her reasoning is actually quite touching.

Bakugo, Todoroki, Midoriya, Uraraka, and Kirishima sit on the grass and relax happily.

My Hero Academia Is Actually Much More Personal Than Fans Think, & Two Moments Prove It

Kohei Horikoshi, the creator of My Hero Academia, has revealed the moments he drew inspiration from to write a few pivotal scenes for the story.

Inko told All Might that Deku's safety is her top priority, and she feared sending him back to U.A. would mean sending him to his imminent death. She blamed herself for allowing him to attend in the first place, taking personal responsibility for Deku's injuries. The tears she shed and the heartfelt words she uttered to All Might proved her deep care for her only child. Once All Might carefully explained to Inko that he would look after Deku and protect him with his life, begging on his knees for the chance to mold Deku into his successor, Inko's mind changed.

Inko Put Aside Her Own Fears for Deku’s Benefit, Showing Her Selflessness

Although It Caused Her Worry and Stress, Inko Made the Best Choice for Deku’s Success, Safety, and Happiness

Izuku Midoriya and his mother Inko.

Like any parent, Inko wants to shield her child from dangerous situations, especially ones that would threaten his life. However, she also began to see Deku and All Might's perspective on the matter once they spoke with her. Deku showed his mother the letter Kota sent after Deku saved him from Muscular, and All Might explained that he saw great potential in Deku and felt he was the only correct choice to be the future Symbol of Peace. Inko was still worried, but she ultimately allowed Deku to go, telling All Might all she really wanted was for Deku "to be happy."

Inko's shift in mindset and willingness to let Deku leave her, even though it caused her immense stress, further reveals how excellent of a mother she is. In this instance, she put her personal feelings aside and allowed Deku to take the path that would give him the most success and fulfillment of his goals, while still sternly warning All Might that he needed to safeguard Deku from harm as much as possible. This levelheaded and balanced decision allowed Deku to move into the U.A. High dorms, continue to thrive in the hero program, and go on to save countless lives.

Throughout the Series, She Has Shown a Pattern of Looking out for Her Son No Matter What

From Designing His Hero Costume to Always Cheering Him On, Inko Is a Phenomenal Mother

Inko has shown a pattern of putting Deku’s needs above her own and always prioritizing his joy, while still being honest with him and offering just the right amount of protection. When Deku was a young child and Quirkless, she supported Deku's dreams of becoming a hero and his love of All Might. But as he got older, she also encouraged him to be level-headed and realize how difficult getting into a hero course may be without a Quirk. She did not outright shoot down Deku's wishes, but she also refused to lie to him and gave him honest advice.

Deku uses his Quirk to save Uraraka, breaking his arm and legs in the process.

10 Best Deku Fights In My Hero Academia That Truly Proves He's The Series' Greatest Hero

My Hero Academia's Deku is famous for his dogged determination, and that's lead to some truly incredible fights throughout the franchise.

When Deku did receive a Quirk from All Might, she continued to stick by Deku, as he embarked on a new chapter as a U.A. High student. She cheered him on when he appeared on television at the sports festival, handmade a hero costume for him, and took a genuine interest in his life and accomplishments. All of these moments prove how great of a mother Inko is to Deku. No parent is perfect and no one gets it right one hundred percent of the time, but Inko always does her best to take Deku's needs, wishes, and well-being into account when making parenting decisions.

Not Every Parent in My Hero Academia Is Admirable, Making Inko a Rare Gem

Sadly, Not Every Character Has a Supportive Parent, Including Hawks, Todoroki, and Toga

Inko carrying Deku and playing with him in a flashback

Not every character in the series is blessed to have a supportive parent, as evidenced by the abuse Todoroki suffers from Endeavor, Hawks' neglectful and hurtful parents, and Toga's parents' mistreatment of her. Deku always expresses gratitude for having a mother who loves him wholeheartedly no matter what and the two enjoy a very close relationship. Deku's father does not really appear in My Hero Academia, so Inko is the only present parent. Although Inko is by no means flawless, she is a pretty phenomenal example of a caring mother, and her indisputable love for Deku helps him become an even better hero.

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the "One-For-All" quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
