Deadline on Monday launched the streaming site for Contenders Film: International, its daylong showcase of movies in the conversation for this year’s International Feature Oscar race.
The casts, directors, writers and producers behind 13 movies joined Deadline’s reporters and editors at the virtual awards-season event Saturday for panel discussions about their films’ journeys to being submitted by their respective countries for the Academy Awards.

This year’s list of films includes 815 Pictures’ Old Fox (representing Taiwan), Dawson Films’ Waves (Czech Republic), FAMart Association’s Three Kilometers to the End of the World (Romania), Leyth Production and Hamzeh Mystique Films’ Take My Breath (Tunisia), Lizart Film’s Under the Volcano (Poland), Mavi Film’s Life (Turkey), Nexiko’s The Last Journey (Sweden), Outsider Pictures’ Queens (Switzerland), Sony Pictures Classics’ I’m Still Here (Brazil) and Kneecap (Ireland), Tanweer Productions’ Murderess (Greece), La Terraza Films’ Saturn Return (Spain) and Well Go USA Entertainment’s Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (Hong Kong).
The breadth of directors joining the conversations is especially notable, with Walter Salles (I’m Still Here), Nada Mezni Hafaiedh (Take My Breath), Soi Cheang (Twilight of the Warriors), Klaudia Reynicke (Queens), Jiri Madl (Waves), Emanuel Parvu (Three Kilometers), Rich Peppiatt (Kneecap), Eva Nathena (Murderess), Zeki Demirkubuz (Life), Isaki Lacuesta (Saturn Return), Damian Kocur (Under the Volcano), Hsiao Ya-Chuan (Old Fox) and the documentarian duo of Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson (The Last Journey) taking part.
Saturday’s event comes after Deadline’s Contenders Film: London in October and the signature Contenders Film: Los Angeles last month, and ahead of Sunday’s Contenders Film: Documentary, as we near the Oscar shortlist unveiling December 17.
