The new Wonder Woman is a transgender DC hero who takes Diana's place in Themyscira. While Princess Diana of Themyscira is DC's avatar of truth and peace, several extraordinary women have stepped forward to claim the mantle of Wonder Woman. Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta, assumed the identity while fighting alongside the Justice Society. The fierce warrior Artemis of Bana-Mighdall temporarily replaced Diana, and in the modern era, Nubia is Diana's contemporary peer, while Brazilian Amazon Yara Flor forges herself as a breakout champion in Future State and Diana's daughter Trinity is promised to carry the mantle one day.

Transgender representation still needs a boost, but DC is taking the necessary steps to achieve it through Dreamer, DC's first openly transgender superhero.

Nia Nal A.K.A. Dreamer Is DC's New Wonder Woman

Justice League: Dream Girls – A DC Pride Event #1; Written By Jadzia Axelrod & Nicole Maines; Art By Nicola Scott, J. Bone, Ted Brandt, And Ro Stein

DC saw the debut of a new superhero team in Justice League Intergalactic Special #1, where Dreamer and Galaxy stood out in their battle against multiple possessed Green Lanterns. Now, after succumbing to the dream influence of Maal Sinestro a.k.a. the Witch Queen, Nia Nal and Taylor Barzelay wake up in another reality in Justice League: Dream Girls – A DC Pride Event #1. In this dimension, they're Amazons, and Nia Nal replaces Diana of Themyscira in her early days, meeting a wounded Steve Trevor and heading toward her very own Wonder Woman origin story.

Combined with her own dream powers, the Witch Queen's influence may allow Nia Nal to experience a significant amount of time in this reality, possibly enough to become a seasoned Wonder Woman. While the weapons and powers she gains in this dimension might not translate to her original reality, she may acquire enough experience and learn enough about Themyscira to enhance her superhero career as Dreamer. Nia's stint as Wonder Woman may also help her navigate her current status as a war criminal, perhaps with the help of the original Diana herself.

Dreamer Deserves A Higher Spot In The DC Universe

Nia Nal Is On Track To Become An A-List Hero

Dreamer and Galaxy lead the Justice League in DC Comics art

Nia Nal's evolution from a CW Supergirl newcomer to a staple of DC's Prime Earth continuity is a momentous achievement. Historically, characters jumping from the screen to the page face an uphill battle, as they're often relegated to background cameos or temporary additions. After becoming the first transgender superhero on television, Nia Nal's cultural impact expanded globally when she made history as Fortnite's first openly transgender character during the 2022 Rainbow Royale event. In the comics, Nia's growth has been handled with care, largely guided by her original live-action actress turned comic architect, Nicole Maines.

45 Strongest Female Characters In The DC Universe

Who are the strongest female DC superheroes and how do the villains compare? These are the most powerful of DC's female characters.

Far from a niche character, Dreamer has had an important role in multiple storylines, from rewriting realities in Lazarus Planet to serving as the central target manipulated by Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad: Dream Team and Absolute Power. In Justice League Intergalactic Special, Dreamer proved she has the grit and power necessary to stand alongside the world's finest, overshadowing Adam Strange and Green Arrow. Moving directly into the front line of the DC All In initiative, Dreamer's starring role in Justice League: Dream Girls as a Wonder Woman parallel cements her upward trajectory.

Would you like to see Dreamer become a Wonder Woman successor?

Justice League: Dream Girls – A DC Pride Event #1 is available from DC Comics June 3, 2026.
