DC Unveils Dark New Origin For Batman’s Name, And It Completely Redefines The Hero

Absolute Batman fascinatingly explores Batman’s lore and mythology, including the symbology of bats and why bats are so paramount to Bruce Wayne’s whole ethos. For instance, at a foundational level, we know that the Absolute universe’s Batman origins date back to when he was a child and survived a mass shooting at Gotham Zoo, where his dad hid him and other children in a bat enclosure.

Ironically, Dr. Leslie Thompkins tells Bruce “that should be the end of you and bats” after giving him rabies vaccination shots, and she’d turn out to be wrong on at least two accounts. Absolute Batman redefines what being the ‘Batman’ means, deconstructing that name and its meaning by having Bruce wield a bat and employing some brilliant yet on-the-nose wordplay in order to depict how he was once the ‘Bat Man’ before he became Batman.

Before Batman, Bruce Wayne Was The Bat Man

According to Scarecrow, it was apparently predestined that Bruce would become Batman—it’s undetermined if this is meant to imply that the events of the Absolute universe were predestined, too, or if the outcome of Bruce’s life alone was tailored to how Scarecrow or Joker saw fit, including Bruce winning his class a trip to the Zoo. Either way, bats have played a crucial role all along.

Indeed, for the Zoo’s Young Engineers Competition, Bruce chose a bat-themed bridge design, which is now a significant artifact representing Bruce and Thomas Wayne’s relationship. Bruce was then shown to take the theme of a bat quite literally in Absolute Batman #4, when he donned a prototypical Batman costume that featured “face paint,” a “voice distorter,” “silicon fangs loaded with paralytic,” and a handgun.

But that’s not all. A new wrinkle in Batman’s origins recently revealed another beautiful layer of complexity to this bat symbology. In Absolute Batman #20, we learn that Bruce spent six months as an inmate in Blackgate Prison in order to work off his debt to Carmine Falcone. In this same issue, we flash forward to after Bruce has finished his role as Falcone’s “guy on the inside” and graduated to an enforcer who’s instructed to wield a baseball bat.

As an enforcer, Bruce either intimidates Falcone’s victims or beats them brutally with the bat, described as a “tool.” However, something snaps him out of this lifestyle choice when he looks at his disfigured, masked reflection in a broken TV screen, following his assault of the Absolute universe’s Matches Malone. The last we see of this prologue in Absolute Batman #23 is “Bat Boy” defending Matches from the Falcone thugs stationed outside, and his blood-soaked baseball bat left on the floor while one of the thugs, who was able to shoot in both of his shoulders/arms, says, “You’re finished, Wayne. You… you hear me? You’re done.”

This has added a lovely texture to Batman’s lore and how thematic bats of any kind are in Scott Snyder’s Absolute Batman series. The baseball bat is representative of a specific era in Bruce’s life, as is the flying bat bridge, and it’s astonishing to see how rich the lore is in Absolute Batman already.

With only 23 issues released so far, it’ll be fun to see how the Batman and Bat-Family mythos can be broadened further. Moreover, Absolute Barbara Gordon won’t be known as Batgirl, Batwoman, or Oracle when she dons Batman’s cowl and Jim Gordon’s trench coat in Absolute Batman #24, instead electing to call herself the Bat.
