DC’s Wonder Woman Game Is Dead, But We Have The Next Best Thing

DC fans suffered a brutal loss when it was announced that Monolith was being shut down and its Wonder Woman game was canceled. If nothing else, what this has made unmistakably clear is that Warner Bros. Games’ acknowledgment of the Batman games’ success has made it unwilling to explore other beloved DC characters.

For the foreseeable future, it’s probably going to be incredibly unlikely that we’ll see a standalone DC game for anyone other than Batman, with the potential for ensemble games to at least feature a handful of playable DC characters alongside Batman. But even that is up in the air. It’s anyone’s guess as to why DC hasn’t already rushed to make a Marvel Rivals clone, seeing how a DC Marvel Rivals game would probably be comparably popular and able to synergize with its own cinematic universe via skins inspired by Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, Superman, Supergirl, and so forth

Monolith’s Wonder Woman Game Could’ve Been Special

As it stands, it appears as if there’s only one DC game on the horizon that has any chance at all of giving Princess Diana of Themyscira the love she deserves. No official information about Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was publicly revealed beyond what little was teased when it was announced, and it’s unknown if any of the leaks regarding it were legitimate. It would be fascinating to hear how far along it was in development, as well as what its gameplay would’ve been like, though that wouldn’t make it hurt any less that it no longer exists.

As much as anyone might enjoy the Batman: Arkham franchise, it’s devastating that we might only be getting Batman games from DC from now on. DC and Warner Bros. Games have no reason to try their luck with a single-player Flash game, for instance, and if they couldn’t make Wonder Woman work, it’s difficult to see how any DC game that doesn’t feature Batman front and center will be greenlit.

Knowing how poorly DC games have assessed and tackled the video game industry zeitgeist with Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it is literally impossible to predict what wild decisions will be made next. A new Batman: Arkham game would surely please many fans, but NetherRealm’s Injustice franchise (which seems to be treading water as is) may be the only chance for Wonder Woman to shine again.

Injustice 3 Is Our Last Hope For A Wonder Woman Game

Assuming that there’s a third Injustice game in development, there’s seemingly no doubt that it would feature Wonder Woman as a playable character again. Even if Injustice 3 does turn out to retcon the lore and narrative from Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2 in favor of dawning a new era, perhaps by taking inspiration from the DC K.O. comic book crossover event, Wonder Woman is too significant a DC character to not include her.

It’s not as if NetherRealm owes it to the character, but it’d be great if Wonder Woman played a larger role in a hypothetical Injustice 3. This way, the character could be honored in a way that would at least attempt to make up for how little we’ve seen of Wonder Woman in DC video games in general, much less her own game, where she’s the titular protagonist. Fans were robbed of that, yet Injustice 3’s story putting her on a pedestal could give them a semblance of the game that she’s earned as much as, say, Batman.

Plus, if Injustice 3 features skins and/or cosmetic customization options like the previous games did, it would be fantastic to have a skin inspired by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman series. This is arguably Wonder Woman’s best look ever, boasting black-and-red armor, the Athena Blade, and a red-tattooed, magical arm, and we sadly aren’t going to be seeing it adapted into a standalone, single-player Wonder Woman game any time soon.
