Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1.Harley Quinn has finally returned for season 5, and the animated DC series brings along a new version of the villain, which could end up being quite exciting due to its casting. James Gunn's DC Universe is getting all the attention these days when it comes to DC. However, the studio will not only focus on Gunn's new franchise, despite how important its success is. As the executive has said, Elseworlds DC movies are coming, and TV shows under that umbrella, such as Harley Quinn and its Kite Man spinoff series, will also have a place at DC.

The Elseworlds label means that those projects exist outside the canon of the DCU, so Margot Robbie's version of Harley Quinn, which many want to be a DCU canon character, can exist on the big screen, while Kaley Cuoco could continue to voice the character in her solo animated series for seasons to come. Harley Quinn season 5 has premiered, with the show moving from Gotham City to Metropolis. That decision has led to Superman and many characters from his corner of DC appearing, and one of them was the villain Brainiac, who comes with an interesting aspect.

January 2025 Has Revealed DC's Newest Brainiac

The Superman Villain Comes To The Small Screen

Brainiac in Harley Quinn Season 5

DC fans have long wanted to see Brainiac appear in 2025. However, the focus of that desire was for the villain to be a surprise player in David Corenswet's Superman movie. While that could still turn out to be true, a new version of Brainiac has now debuted months before the DCU's first film arrives in theaters. The Superman villain was revealed at the very end of Harley Quinn season 5's first episode. Due to only having appeared for a few seconds, Brainiac has yet to do much, but interesting details about him have already been revealed.

Harley Quinn Season 5 Review: DC's Most Interesting Series Cleverly Reinvents Itself & Makes A Case For Its Continued Existence

Harley Quinn season 5 makes the most of its new setting with major DC characters and a thrilling story leading to one of the show's best seasons.

Before Brainiac appeared, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy went to Metropolis. Superman was sad because the city no longer needed him, as cutting-edge drones kept the peace. Those robots were revealed to be controlled by Brainiac. The villain's interest in Metropolis was also outlined, as the character plans to make the City of Tomorrow reach 100% perfection, likely to bottle it. Harley and Ivy's move to Metropolis made the progress bar Brainiac was monitoring go from 99% to 86%. The villain is not happy at all with the duo, and this should lead to plenty of clashes throughout the season.

Harley Quinn Season 5's Brainiac Is Played By Stephen Fry

The British Actor Brings Something Different To The Table

After Brainiac was revealed in the Harley Quinn season 5 trailer, there was much speculation about who could be playing the Superman villain. The DC series' first episode confirmed that the actor in charge of giving life to Brainiac is Stephen Fry. Before appearing in Harley Quinn season 5, Fry was in two tangential DC projects. While not directly part of the superhero world that features characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, Fry played a role in the V for Vendetta movie and, more recently, was part of Netflix's The Sandman.

In V for Vendetta, Fry played Gordon Deitrich. The talk show host dies after being brutally beaten. The reason for that is he mocked High Chancellor Adam Sutler during one of his shows, and Norsefire, the political party in charge of Britain led by Sutler, ensured it was the last time he would do something like that. In Netflix's The Sandman, Fry's role did not end in death. He played Fiddler's Green, who was initially a dream of a lush, green field and forest that grew bored with its place in the Dreaming and took the form of a man.

Why Stephen Fry Is Perfect For Harley Quinn's Brainiac

The Actor's Career Makes Him A Fine Choice For The Role

Fry is an excellent choice for Brainiac in Harley Quinn season 5, even if he is not someone a DC fan might initially think of for the role. While there are a few dramatic roles in his filmography, Fry made his fame through two avenues — voice roles and comedy. Well, Harley Quinn allows the actor to unite both of those in one place, bringing his best qualities to Brainiac. The Superman villain is normally quite frightening, killing millions and bottling citiesall over the universe to add to his collection.

As Harley Quinn presents a more comedic take on other darker DC characters, such as Batman and Bane, Fry playing Brainiac makes perfect sense. The actor has the skills to make the Superman villain seamlessly fit the tone of the animated series while also infusing Brainiac with scary undertones. Since Harley Quinn is a TV-MA series, Brainiac could easily be more humorous while also murdering characters. Based on episode 1, he will have a bone to pick with Harley and Ivy, and Fry's talents should lead to hilarious scenes with the duo in Harley Quinn season 5.
