Although the pink-skinned and mustachioed Sinestro is instantly recognizable to longtime Green Lantern fans, this brand-new DCU version is clearly not a one-to-one adaptation of the Sinestro seen on the page. A former Green Lantern disenfranchised by the Corps who took matters into his hands before embracing a new light to wield, it looks as though the character's core DNA is there. However, some key changes to his history in Lanterns are pretty exciting as well.
Already introduced as a major traitor to the Green Lantern Corps (unlike in 2011's Green Lantern movie), here's what we know about the DCU's Sinestro so far, and what we can likely expect from the major villain in future episodes of Lanterns.
Lanterns Episode 2 Debuts The DCU's Live-Action Sinestro
Sinestro's name is first said in the new DC series by Sheriff Kerry Kane in Lanterns episode 2, revealing that Hal Jordan had been saying it in his sleep at the hospital following the bullet he took while confronting William Macon.
Having looked up the name while Hal was out, Kane learned about Sinestro's history in the DCU, confirming that he was once a Green Lantern. Apparently, Sinestro attempted to stage a coup and even killed one of the Guardians of the Universe (creators and leaders of the Corps) before he was taken down by Hal Jordan himself. As such, this brief exchange between Hal and Kerry has already confirmed just how powerful and dangerous Sinestro is in the DCU.
By the end of Lanterns episode 2, Hal chooses to visit Sinestro in his cell located on another world, wanting to learn everything the former Green Lantern knows about the Manhunters, as one is apparently hiding out on Earth, disguised as a human in Rushville, Nebraska.
While he does confirm that he does have some knowledge of the dangers Hal is facing, Sinestro is notably more interested in John Stewart, Hal's new trainee. As a result, Sinestro couldn't have been given a more intriguing live-action debut in the new DCU.
How Lanterns Is Already Changing Sinestro's Origins From The Comics
It's worth noting that Sinestro's early comic book history is different. Originally established as one of the greatest Green Lanterns in the Corps and Hal Jordan's mentor, Hal eventually discovered that Sinestro was using his power ring to secretly rule over his home world of Korugar as a dictator. Exposing Sinestro and taking him down, the Guardians banish Sinestro to an antimatter universe and the planet Qward. This resulted in Sinestro's evolution into one of the most dangerous Green Lantern villains after he embraced the yellow light of fear and started his own Sinestro Corps.
Keeping that in mind, it's absolutely fascinating that Sinestro's betrayal in the DCU seems to have been far more direct, staging an outright coup and even killing one of the Guardians (some of the most powerful beings in all of DC Comics). As such, one has to wonder if Sinestro tried taking over on his own, or if he potentially had followers...
Likewise, there are now several fascinating questions in need of answering going forward. Did Sinestro's ability to kill a Guardian come from the yellow light of fear? It's hard to know at the moment considering the DCU's Sinestro is introduced unarmed and wearing an alien prison jumpsuit. While it does feel likely, it hasn't yet been confirmed if this live-action Sinestro is Hal's mentor either, though there's plenty of time for Lanterns to reveal more of their history in the episodes to come.
Hopefully, the rest of the season will give Ulrich Thomsen plenty of opportunities to show exactly what makes this new live-action version of Sinestro so dangerous in the DCU.
