DC Finally Introduces A Villain Who Is Darkseid's Equal

The immense power Superman derives from his Kryptonian physiology allows him to accomplish feats that almost no other hero can even attempt, but some enemies are so powerful that fighting them doesn't make sense, even to the Man of Steel himself. Superman's unmatched level of power guarantees an easy victory much less often than one would think. Kal-El often finds himself overpowered by foes as strong as Doomsday, Darkseid, and Mongul, each of whom demands more than overwhelming strength. Large-scale catastrophes also force Superman into impossible choices where emergencies erupt simultaneously, leaving him unable to save everyone despite his extraordinary speed.

Many of Superman's greatest struggles arise from obstacles that no amount of physical strength can solve. While Kryptonite and magic are Clark Kent's most recognizable weaknesses, some of his most demanding battles revolve around careful strategy and moral judgment, or psychological pressure from his enemies. Lex Luthor usually weaponizes more than Kryptonite and his warsuit to torment Superman. Meanwhile, Brainiac, Mister Mxyzptlk, and Darkseid craft plans that spread Superman thin and force him to make difficult choices where he must make sacrifices.

Superman Meets A Powerful New Version Of The Infinite Man

Faced with his own profound mortality and the impending destruction of everything he holds dear following the events of DC K.O., Superman follows in Time Trapper's steps and travels to the 31st century to learn that he needs to sacrifice most versions of the Legion of Super-Heroes so at least one of them can survive. In one of the possible futures he visits, an apocalyptic dystopia is tormented by the presence of the Infinite Man, the powerful enemy of the Legion of Super-Heroes who turned evil (and nearly omnipotent) after experimenting with time and the fourth dimension.

Introduced during Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen's celebrated Legion era, Infinite Man is a living temporal anomaly whose unbreakable connection to time itself makes him extraordinarily difficult to defeat through ordinary means. Infinite Man's reality-defying nature allows him to challenge all Legionnaires simultaneously, or even skip the battle entirely and instead attack the time stream's stability. Battles with Infinite Man are puzzles more than they are traditional battles, as the Legion need to devise elaborate scientific and temporal solutions instead of relying on brute force. Superman follows suit in Superman 2026 Annual: Year One Thousand, where he dives into the time stream instead of fighting Infinite Man.

Winning Battles With Sheer Power Is No Longer Superman's Priority

Superman has approached his nearly-invincible Kryptonian nature with humility since the start of his superhero career, but he has also experienced cataclysmic events that his super-strength, super-speed, and invulnerability are less reliable than anyone may think. Most recently, in DC K.O., Lex Luthor deploys a devastating Kryptonite weapon that pierces through Clark Kent's otherwise impenetrable skin, severing his hand and leaving him incapacitated on the arena floor. Soon after, Superman technically loses the Omega Tournament, and he only becomes King Omega after Time Trapper's sacrifice. Later on, Superman is pulled into the end of time, and he only survives thanks to his younger self's heroism.

After receiving his King Omega upgrade but before ending up at the end of time, Superman's trip through the time stream reveals none of his superpowers allow him to save all versions of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and what's even worse, not even his most powerful form could be powerful enough to defeat the Infinite Man. At this point in his life, Superman seems more concerned with how he can balance increasingly unbeatable threats with his personal life and relationships, and rightfully so, as the Man of Steel may never be strong or fast enough to protect the world permanently.
