Dave Bautista is all set to play Kratos in Prime Video's highly anticipated live-action adaptation of God of War. He undoubtedly seems a great fit for the role and his casting is a perfect reminder of how Zack Snyder envisioned him almost five years ago.

Perhaps in an alternate universe, Bautista may not have even gotten the opportunity to play Kratos in God of War. Before him, Ryan Hurst of the Sons of Anarchy fame was cast to play the video game character. Hurst, too, was an excellent choice for the part, but, as fate would have it, a major injury forced him to step back from the part and pass the mantle to someone else.

This is when Dave Bautista entered the picture. After being fancast as Kratos for decades, Bautista finally landed the part and even revealed how he was working towards putting on muscle mass to be able to accurately capture the imposing video game character. It is hard not to see how Bautista Kratos' casting perfectly aligns with how Snyder once envisioned the former WWE star.

Zack Snyder Was Right, Dave Bautista Is More Than A Conventional Action Hero

Dave Bautista's one-liners as Drax in the MCU are still incredibly hilarious, and he will always be remembered for playing the part. However, as Bautista himself has explained, the role was very limiting in the sense that it largely did not allow him to be anything more than a big guy who says silly and funny lines time and again.

On more than one occasion, Bautista has explained how he hopes to separate himself from the conventional action movie star image of most former WWE stars who turned to acting. He has expressed how much he loves the art of acting in itself and hopes to be more than just a big guy who walks into a room and turns heads.

Zack Snyder recognized Dave Bautista's potential and range as an actor and called him (via Nerdist) an "anti-action action hero.” After seeing Dave Bautista in movies like Glass Onion, Blade Runner 2049, and The Wrecking Crew, it is hard not to see how the description perfectly fits the actor. Owing to his size and physicality, he usually has incredible screen presence.

In appearance, Bautista will always come off as an action star. However, in many movies, the former WWE star has done such an incredible job of showcasing his dramatic range that it is hard not to see him as a serious actor. His brief but impactful part in Blade Runner 2049 alone is the perfect example of how he can bring genuine emotional depth to even the smallest roles.

Kratos’ Emotional Depth In God Of War Makes Him The Perfect Character For Bautista

The God of War games are packed with brutal action sequences. Owing to this, Bautista's casting in the Prime Video adaptation reinstates him as an action star. However, Kratos' story in God of War's Norse saga is not purely driven by relentless action. He is portrayed as a stoic, broken, and reserved anti-hero who carries the heavy burden of his past.

As an "anti-action action hero," Dave Bautista not only has the physicality and appearance to accurately portray Kratos but also the acting forte. After playing enough layered and emotionally dense characters on the screen, he seems prepared to tackle everything from Kratos' "Ghost of Sparta" to his growth as a father.

Dave Bautista's casting alone makes Prime Video's God of War adaptation all the more exciting and almost guarantees that the upcoming show will not disappoint.
