How much would you be willing to pay for Darth Vader’s lightsaber from Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi? For at least one lucky fan, the answer was more than $3.65 million.
The lightsaber sold for a cool $3,654,000 on Thursday—a record for a Star Wars item sold at auction. It sold as part of the first day lots of Propstore’s Los Angeles Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction and is the only hero lightsaber across the two films “with verifiable screen use ever” to ever come to public auction.
“Today’s result marks a landmark moment not just for Propstore, but for the entire world of film collecting,” said Propstore CEO Brandon Allinger. “To see a Star Wars lightsaber – the symbol of one of cinema’s greatest sagas – become the highest-valued piece of the franchise ever sold at auction is incredibly special. It speaks to the enduring cultural power of Star Wars and the passion of fans and collectors who see these artifacts as touchstones of modern mythology.”
Propstore highlighted other notable items for sale included Indiana Jones’ bullwhip, gun holster, and belt from Last Crusade ($485,100), Picard’s Resskian flute and screen matched box from the Star Trek: The Generation episode “The Inner Light” ($403,200), and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2 costume ($289,900). Day one saw 433 items sold for a cumulative total of $14.3 million, and the second and third days(today, September 5 and Saturday, September 6) also have more than 600 lots available for bidding.
Still up for grabs include costumes and props from various Alien and The Matrix movies, Deathstroke’s mask from Arrow season two, and Power Coins from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie.
Registration for either day is available here, and bidding starts at 10 am PT on each day.
