Darth Maul first arrived as a signature Star Wars villain all the way back in 1999 in The Phantom Menace, and years later, he’s set to return in a new animated Disney+ series. Ray Park first played the character in live-action many years ago, and although he briefly reprised the role in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Sam Witwer took over voice duties for the character in The Clone Wars and Rebels. Last year at Star Wars Celebration, Disney announced it was developing a new animated series, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, which is now set to be released in April. The first two episodes will premiere on April 6, with two new episodes dropping weekly until the final two episodes premiere on May 4.
Collider’s Exclusive Spring Preview event is now in full swing, and we’re thrilled to debut a new image from the series, which sees Maul igniting his signature red lightsaber. Last year, during an interview with Collider, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord actor Sam Witwer confirmed that the show takes place one year after The Clone Wars. This means it will take place before the events of Rebels, so it will continue the long-running Star Wars trend of filling in gaps from older projects. The first trailer for the series also showed Maul taking a new Twi’lek apprentice, a young Force user who is not living up to her full potential.
The first trailer and information dump for Maul: Shadow Lord also revealed some interesting information about the series. It was confirmed that Wagner Moura had been cast as Brandon Lawson. Moura is fresh off his first Oscar nomination for his performance in The Secret Agent, and he’s also famous for his work in Ridley Scott’s Apple TV series, Dope Thief.
Star Wars Has Two Big Movies Coming Soon
Just a few weeks after Maul: Shadow Lord airs its final two episodes, Star Wars will return to the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film will be released on May 22, and it stars Pedro Pascal opposite Sigourney Weaver. In 2027, Lucasfilm will also debut Starfighter, which hails from director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine). Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) has been tapped to star in the lead role in the film with a supporting cast led by Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, and more.
Check out the new image from Maul: Shadow Lord above and stay tuned for more TV news all week long from Collider’s Exclusive Preview event.
