Daredevil: Born Again ending with season 3 was decided long before 2026.

The news broke in September that the show was concluding with season 3, about two months after principal photography had wrapped and with showrunner Dario Scardapane exiting Marvel Studios after his contract was not renewed and as post-production continued. The Marvel TV show cancellation was widely met with surprise and disappointment, especially with the titular character only now getting to reunite with the rest of the Defenders in the upcoming season.

While speaking with Brandon Davis, Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television and an executive producer of Daredevil: Born Again, explained that it was always the plan for the series to end with season 3: "The plan was to always make a third season, to culminate it with three because the way we were looking at it, the original series is three seasons, Born Again three seasons... they're kind of like trade paperbacks, collections that you can slot into your shelf as these are two three-volume sets, and then we'll take a breath and figure out what's next for the character." Check out Winderbaum's full response below:

Winderbaum's explanation recontextualizes the series coming to an end, framing it as a planned ending rather than a cancellation. The decision has also been seen as part of the uncertainty surrounding Marvel's live-action television, as after having a robust slate of new seasons coming to Disney+ for several years, 2028's Zodiac is now the only confirmed live-action show coming after Daredevil: Born Again season 3. As the Marvel executive alludes to, though, the news of the show ending "got conflated with a few things."

Even though this is the end of the latest series centered on the Man Without Fear, Winderbaum makes it clear that this is not the end of the character's future. Daredevil actor Charlie Cox agrees with this, telling ScreenRant's Liam Crowley at New York Comic Con that "I think there will be something, [it] might not be for a long time, but there are [ways] I think he will show up somehow, somewhere." His only other confirmed upcoming Marvel project is the animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2, in which he voices Daredevil.

In terms of reception, the show has been well-received, with an 87% critics' score for both seasons on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 79% audience score for season 1 and 85% for season 2. In ScreenRant's Daredevil: Born Again season 2 review, Felipe Rangel gave it eight out of 10 stars and wrote that "with relentless action, hard-hitting drama, complex characters, several shocking surprises, and more, Daredevil: Born Again's new season cements the show as one of the best projects the MCU has released thus far."

Daredevil: Born Again season 2's viewership had a significant decline compared with season 1, especially when looking at the first five weeks of both seasons, but season 3 had already been renewed with filming underway by this point. With the plan seemingly having been to end with season 3 anyway, the loss of viewership may not have been as important of a factor in the show's fate, although it may have still played a role.

Along with Cox as the eponymous character, the season 3 cast includes Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Wilson Bethel as Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter/Bullseye, Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn, and Matthew Lillard as Mr. Charles. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter are also coming back as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage after making their series debuts in season 2, and will be joined by Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), allowing a full Defenders reunion to become a reality.

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2027 and will be Marvel's only live-action TV release of that year.
