Danielle Spencer has shared an insight into her sweet reunion with her former husband, Russell Crowe, last year.

The friendly exes shared the stage for a music gig at Sydney's Enmore Theatre in December.

The 56-year-old actress appeared as a 'guest performer' as part of a one-off show which was headlined by Russell's band, Indoor Garden Party.

Spencer told Nine Honey this week that she thought it was 'lovely of him' to invite her to take part in the show, and moving for the couple's sons, Charles, 19, and Tennyson, 22.

'I thought it was a really sweet thing to do, and it was lovely for our boys to have mum and dad both doing their thing up on stage,' she told the publication.

'It felt like such a special moment; I haven't performed with Russell in a long time. The night was incredible.

'It was a nice, kind of full circle moment with Russell, I think.'

Revisiting that bond for this new performance has been a sentimental process for the actress and singer.

'Russell and I connected through music in the early days of knowing each other,' Danielle told news.com.au.

'We've performed together countless times over the years. It seemed like a lovely full circle moment.'

It comes after Danielle recently spoke about the guilt she felt following her 2018 divorce from Russell, 61.

The actress and musician opened up about her high-profile split from the star after 15 years on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About.

'It's really sad breaking up with somebody that you've known for so long, that you've had children with,' she confessed to podcast host Sarrah Le Marquand.

'Me kind of breaking up the family – and it felt very much like I was driving that – so I had to deal with my almost sense of guilt that I was fracturing the family, but obviously I did it for a number of reasons and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think it needed to happen.'

Danielle added that although she and Russell now enjoy a strong friendship while co-parenting their sons, the journey after divorce wasn’t without its challenges.

'There were days and moments where obviously things were not fine, were tense, we were unhappy and it's sad,' she shared, adding she didn't want people to assume her split was smooth sailing.

Russell has previously revealed that he is still in close contact with his ex-wife.

Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Russell shared his excitement for the one-night-only performance and a surprising opening act.

Former host Kyle Sandilands went on to commend the Aussie actor for his ability to remain on good terms with his ex.

'Isn't it nice when you can get an ex to also show up and it doesn't cause any trouble with the current missus? Everyone's happy. She's the mother of your child,' he said of the blended family.

Russell replied: 'Yeah everybody's cool. The coolest about that is my kids. They're like, "Dad, that's really excellent".'
