The history of James Bond goes back over 50 years, and there have been plenty of iconic actors to take a turn at playing 007 during his lengthy tenure. The first to truly bring the character to the big screen with style was Sean Connery, who later passed the mantle to Pierce Brosnan in the '90s. The James Bond of the younger generation is Daniel Craig, who starred in five Bond movies before ultimately calling it quits with 007’s first on-screen death in 2021’s No Time to Die. The search is currently underway for the next James Bond, but it’s yet to be announced who will take over the role.
Craig’s most successful Bond movie was Skyfall, the 2012 film that co-stars Javier Bardem as one of the great Bond villains in Silva. It’s the only James Bond film to gross over $1 billion at the box office, and it also picked up two Oscars for Best Original Song and Best Sound Editing. It even earned nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Music, and Best Sound Mixing, and many fans felt it was snubbed from earning a Best Picture nomination. Sam Mendes directed Skyfall with a script from Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and John Logan.
At the time of writing, Skyfall is currently streaming on Netflix in America. This is part of a new deal between Netflix and Amazon that allowed all Bond movies to begin streaming on the platform last month. Skyfall has also become one of the top 10 most popular movies on VOD platforms like iTunes in several countries around the world on the heels of it having a successful run on Netflix. The film earned scores of 92% from critics and 86% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
What Do We Know About the Next James Bond Movie?
Very little is known about the next James Bond movie at this time, apart from that Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) will direct with a script from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). Villeneuve has confirmed that he will begin work on the film once he wraps up with Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled to be released at the end of the year. Fans are still clamoring to see big names like Henry Cavill or Idris Elba as the next 007, but reports indicate Amazon is looking for a younger actor.
Be sure to watch Skyfall on Netflix in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
