Apostle is a gothic horror film directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla), and is about a former missionary who returns home to find that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. What works so well about Apostle is how it builds the sense of dread through the atmosphere, forgoing standard horror film scares for something that digs a little deeper. It's a brutal and often terrifying watch, but excels at what it sets out to do.
Dan Stevens is asked to do a lot in his role as Thomas Richardson, the former missionary who has lost his faith. It's one of the most demanding roles of his career, and he knocks it out of the park, capturing the intensity of the character, and he commands attention in every scene that he is in. Over his illustrious career, Stevens has shown that he is an actor with a diverse range, and films like Apostle prove just that.

Stevens has played antagonists before, and he does so here as well, crafting a delightful thorn in the side of the crew, sucking up to the king and queen along the way.
8 Sense and Sensibility (2008)
Dan Stevens as Edward Ferrars
Sense and Sensibility is a 2008 BBC miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen's novel of the same name. The story revolves around two sisters in 1800s England as they try to find love, and they couldn't be more opposite. It isn't the first adaptation of the novel, but it succeeds quite well, capturing the spirit of the source material with gorgeous cinematography and costuming, something BBC always excels at. It's a touching story about the role of women in society and marriage.
Dan Stevens plays Edward Ferrars in all three episodes of the adaptation, the oldest of Fanny Dashwood's two brothers. Edward develops an attachment and eventually marries Elinor Dashwood, the calm and proper sister, alongside Marianne, the passionate one. There is something delectably creepy about his performance...
Dan Stevens was perfect as David, who is often restrained by off-putting for a lot of the film. There is something delectably creepy about his performance, and as the cracks begin to show, he can be downright terrifying. The Boy and the Heron is simply magical, telling the story of Mahito, a boy who moves to the countryside after the death of his mother. There, he meets a mysterious, talking grey heron that leads him into a magical new world. Touted as legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki's last film, The Boy and the Heron is one of his best, winning Best Animated Picture at the Academy Awards, the second of his career. Empathetic, beautiful and poignant, animated films really don't get better than this.
It's hard to properly evaluate Dan Stevens in The Boy and the Heron, given that he has a tiny role in the English dub, but the story behind why he wanted to be in the movie is really great. Given that Stevens is a huge Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki fan, he told IndieWire that his love for the studio led to him taking the gig, and that it was "very cool to get a sneak preview of a new Miyazaki movie." While he only voices a parakeet in The Boy and the Heron, it's great that he was able to be part of what might be Hayao Miyazaki's final swan song.
