Sentiment slid into fear territory in a single day as liquidations swept through futures markets and traders watched the 200-day moving average

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell to a reading of 29-30 on October 30, 2026. That was a 21-point drop from 51 the day before.

The slide came as Bitcoin slipped below $77,000. Bitcoin hit an overnight low near $76,400 before clawing back some ground. For context, it closed around $77,839 on October 29.

What pushed the market into fear

The catalyst traces back to Binance. The exchange reported a $6.3 billion breach spanning October 29-30, according to the research findings. The selloff that followed spread quickly across the market.

BNB, the token tied to the exchange’s ecosystem, dropped approximately 8.5%.

The damage spread to derivatives. About $1.57 billion in crypto futures positions were liquidated over 24 hours.

Bitcoin accounted for roughly $522 million of those liquidations. Ether added around $361 million. Together, the two largest assets made up more than half of the total wiped-out positions.

The broader picture stayed relatively intact. Bitcoin’s dominance hovered near 59%. Total crypto market capitalization sat around $2.6 trillion.

The buy-the-fear argument

A post circulating on X framed the reading of 29 as a signal of a historical buying opportunity. The logic is familiar to anyone who has heard Warren Buffett’s line about being greedy when others are fearful.

Analyst Benjamin Cowen pointed to a more technical reference point. He identified potential support at the 200-day moving average, near $73,000.

Cowen’s view draws on historical trading patterns during election years. That timing is relevant, because the US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, just days after the selloff.

Why this sentiment shift is worth watching

For leveraged traders, the $1.57 billion liquidation figure is the clearest warning. Positions built on borrowed money did not survive a move that took Bitcoin from around $77,839 to near $76,400. That is a decline of under 2% at the low.

Bitcoin’s hold on roughly 59% of the market and a total market cap around $2.6 trillion suggest the selloff hit sentiment harder than it hit valuations.

BNB’s approximately 8.5% drop offers a real-time read on how much confidence traders retain in the Binance ecosystem.
