The founders of Critical Role have never been shy about expressing how many ideas and projects they have to expand the worlds they've created. Recently, Critical Role's CEO, Travis Willingham, said that there was still a lot to explore in the world of Exandria and, more importantly, that Critical Role's venture into new and exciting projects wasn't limited to animated adaptations but also included video games and books.
However, as revealed by Willingham and fellow co-founder Laura Bailey, Critical Role's potential projects and adaptations are not limited to exploring only the canonical side of events from the cast's Dungeons & Dragons campaigns.
Speaking on Critical Role's Beacon-exclusive talk show, Fireside Chat, Willingham and Bailey answered a variety of questions from Critters all over the world. One question posed to the duo was whether Critical Role had ever considered doing their own spin on Marvel's What If...? series that explores alternate universes.
"We have talked about that very thing in a variety of medias, so that's always a possibility," Willingham confirmed. "Great idea. Great minds think alike."
The original What If...? Marvel comics reimagined canonical events with a fun twist, such as "What If Captain America Hadn't Vanished During World War II?" and "What If Someone Else Besides Spider-Man Had Been Bitten By The Radioactive Spider?" Marvel Studios adapted the idea into an animated TV series that explored alternate-universe ideas like Peggy Carter serving as Captain America, T'Challa becoming Star-Lord, and Howard the Duck getting married. It has proven to be an innovative way to tell stories that wouldn't normally make it to the silver screen, while also giving franchise fans a new spin on what they already know and love.
Image: Critical Role/BeaconIt's undeniable that a lot could be done with a Critical Role What If...? series, given the animated adaptation's origins in tabletop RPGs. For example, what if Vox Machina's Grog was a wizard instead? Alternatively, what if Scanlan found himself as part of the Mighty Nein's adventuring group? Could Critters imagine an episode where Laudna survived the brutal savagery of Otohan Thull? There are so many possibilities that if Critical Role did end up doing a What If...? series, then there would be an incredible number of ideas to choose from.
Currently, the project is in a 'what if' phase and has not yet been confirmed. However, if Critical Role were to create a Marvel-style What If...? series based on its Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, we don't doubt that Critters would be eager to see what direction the project would take.
