Remedy Entertainment has announced that Control Resonant has gone gold. That means that development on the hack-and-slash sequel to 2019's Control is essentially complete ahead of its Sept. 24 release date. That good news has a catch, however, as the physical release has been delayed.

Remedy made the announcement on its official X account with a celebratory picture of some of the development team. The post very briefly shared the good news that Resonant has gone gold and reminds players of its approaching release date. It then announced the bad news. The physical release of the game has been moved to Oct. 15, with Remedy explaining that it needed "just a little more time to deliver the physical version to you, but rest assured — nothing stays contained forever." All things considered, a three-week delay isn't so bad, though players set on the physical edition may be a little annoyed they won't be able to dive into Resonant's warped version of Manhattan on release day.

While set in the same world as the original Control, Resonant makes several changes to its predecessor's formula. Players will take on the role of Dylan Faden this time around as he battles through a supernaturally twisted Manhattan. Rather than Control's third-person shooting gameplay, Resonant will be more of a hack-and-slash game with melee combat. While Remedy says it isn't strictly an open-world game, the map is designed around open-ended zones that put a larger focus on player exploration and freedom.

Due to the larger scale of Resonant, the game is expected to take substantially longer to complete than its predecessor. Control's main story is about 12 hours; Remedy estimates the sequel will be more than double that — roughly 30 hours. Remedy is sure to deliver something unique with Resonant, even if it seems like somewhat of a departure for the studio. Fans will especially be eager to see how the game connects to the larger Remedy Universe, and whether any characters from Alan Wake will appear.

Control Resonant will be released Sept. 24 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
