As the Moana remake settles into its second weekend, another Disney movie may soon come to live-action.
That’d be The Princess and the Frog, sort of. Per Deadline, Colman Domingo is teaming with Slave Play director Robert O’Hara to develop a script for a project centered on the animated feature’s lead, Princess Tiana. The outlet notes the project’s in its “early days,” meaning it could easily go into full development or not at all, depending on what Disney decides. Despite its live-action focus, the studio’s also turned down some franchise extensions, like a Gaston and Le Fou spinoff and one for the Aladdin remake’s character played by Billy Magnussen.
Really, the most interesting thing about this Tiana project is that someone’s even interested in continuing The Princess & the Frog on screen. It was over a year ago that Disney pulled the plug on an animated series focused on (and named after) Tiana set after the events of the film and bringing back her voice actor, Anika Noni Rose. Previously announced in 2023, the Disney+ show would’ve focused on Tiana having music and food-based adventures in New Orleans. Unfortunately, it was a victim of the rollbacks that hit Disney at the time, allegedly in part due to a troubled production that resulted in some shakeups to the creative team.
As of last year, an animated short-form special has replaced the scrapped Tiana series. It’s unclear how or if that affects this new project O’Hara and Domingo are starting up—either way, we’ll have more on the situation as news emerges.
