CoinMarketCap has acquired CoinGlass, the derivatives analytics platform known for its liquidation heatmaps and open interest trackers. The deal, completed on September 25, brings CoinGlass’s specialized derivatives toolkit under the same roof as CoinMarketCap’s massive audience of 115 million monthly users. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What CoinGlass brings to the table
CoinGlass has quietly become one of the most important data providers in crypto since its founding in 2019. The platform tracks derivatives data across 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 trading instruments, covering everything from perpetual futures to options contracts.
Its signature products, liquidation heatmaps, open-interest dashboards, and funding-rate tables, have become essential tools for traders managing leveraged positions.
The platform serves over 5 million monthly users and counts more than 10,000 API clients.
CoinGlass will retain its brand, team, website, app, free tools, API, and pricing following the acquisition.
Why derivatives data matters more than ever
Derivatives trading now constitutes the majority of total crypto trading volume. Open interest data reveals how much capital is committed to outstanding derivative contracts. Liquidation data shows how many leveraged positions got wiped out, on which exchanges, and at what price levels.
CoinMarketCap, for all its dominance in price tracking and market cap rankings, has historically been a spot-market-first platform. Adding CoinGlass’s derivatives layer fills a significant gap in its data offering.
The Binance connection and CoinMarketCap’s expansion strategy
CoinMarketCap has been owned by Binance since 2020. The CoinGlass acquisition represents an acceleration of CoinMarketCap’s data expansion strategy under Binance’s ownership. By integrating derivatives analytics that span 28 exchanges, CoinMarketCap positions itself as a more comprehensive, exchange-agnostic data provider.
What this means for traders and the competitive landscape
For retail traders, the practical impact could be significant. Instead of toggling between CoinMarketCap for price data and CoinGlass for derivatives analytics, they’ll eventually get both in one place. The 10,000 API clients CoinGlass already serves suggest meaningful institutional demand for this kind of information.
Rival data platforms like CoinGecko, which competes directly with CoinMarketCap on spot market data, now face a competitor with a significantly enhanced derivatives offering. CoinMarketCap’s distribution advantage of 115 million monthly users is difficult to match.
