Coinbase has flipped the GRASS-USD trading pair into limit-only mode on both Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Advanced, restricting traders to placing and canceling limit orders while blocking market orders entirely. The move came on August 26 as spot trading for the Grass token officially went live on the platform.
How the launch sequence works
The process began with a 10-minute initial auction phase designed to stabilize the order book before any real trading commenced. After that window closed, the pair shifted into limit-only mode, which is where it currently sits.
In practical terms, limit-only mode means traders can set a specific price at which they want to buy or sell, but they can’t fire off market orders that execute instantly at whatever the current price happens to be.
The exchange has deployed this exact framework for other recent launches, including GROVE-USD and DRB-USD.
What is Grass and why is it on Coinbase
Grass is the native token of a decentralized physical infrastructure network, commonly referred to as a DePIN project, built on the Solana blockchain. The network incentivizes users to share their unused internet bandwidth, essentially turning idle connectivity into a resource that others can tap into.
Coinbase first added GRASS to its listing roadmap on August 21, alongside several other tokens including Basecat (BASECAT), DebtReliefBot (DRB), and Dolphin (POD). The actual spot listing was contingent on the token meeting Coinbase’s liquidity conditions, a threshold it apparently cleared five days later.
GRASS isn’t entirely new to the Coinbase ecosystem, though. The token already had perpetual futures trading available under the GRASS-PERP ticker on Coinbase International Exchange, which reached full trading mode back in March 2025.
Why the controlled approach matters for traders
For anyone looking to trade GRASS on Coinbase right now, the limit-only restriction means traders who want to get in or out quickly can’t do so with market orders. They need to set a price and wait, which introduces execution risk. If the market moves away from your limit price, your order simply doesn’t fill.
This phase typically doesn’t last long. Coinbase generally transitions trading pairs through a progression: auction, limit-only, and eventually full trading with market orders enabled.
