The series, created by Tom Rob Smith, follows a team of FBI agents in both their professional and personal lives.

The series takes place over three different time periods. One is in the past, in 2009; then another takes place in the present, in 2023 and 2025; and the last one takes place in the future, in 2034. Each character in Class of '09 is played by the same actor through all three time periods, with slight changes made to their appearances which helps the audience orient themselves in each decade. The show primarily focuses on the transformation of the U.S. criminal justice system with the advances of artificial intelligence.
