Nicholas Becher is a gaming journalist with an MFA in Creative Writing from FAU. With extensive experience playing video games, he covers all forms of gaming content at Screen Rant, from breaking news to the latest fan theories. Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is easily one of the biggest success stories in modern gaming, rising from humble beginnings to become the 2025 Game of the Year winner and setting countless records since its launch back in April last year. The game is hailed for its original world-building, incredibly emotional story, unforgettable characters, and unmatched gameplay, and gamers have been eager to learn more about Sandfall Interactive's plans for the future of the franchise.

While Clair Obscur's primary creator, Guillaume Broche, has made it clear that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is only the first installment in what could be a sprawling franchise. However, beyond this vague confirmation of eventual sequels, there's been no substantive information about what shape the next game will take, whether that ends up being a direct sequel, the story of another expedition team, a new narrative based on the Writers, etc.

However, in a recent Video Game Club interview, Broche gave fans an official teaser of what's next from Sandfall Interactive, and gamers definitely have a lot to speculate over in the coming months (via YouTube).

In the lengthy discussion with Broche, he was pressed several times on Sandfall Interactive's future plans and specifically asked if their next game will be a Clair Obscur chapter. While he's reluctant to say outright that Clair Obscur 2 is the studio's next game, he notes that the team is approaching their next project with the same attitude as they did with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

This means that they are making a game that they would want to play, and he notes that it may not end up being everyone's cup of tea, which he seems perfectly content with. During the interview, he suggests that the studio will be making "drastic decisions" with their next release, though this could mean a plethora of different things, ranging from drastic changes to the game's genre, gameplay style, art direction and writing, etc.

The general thrust of the interview answers from Broche feel like he's pointing toward a non-Clair Obscur follow-up project, though he also reiterates past statements regarding Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 only being the first installment in a larger franchise. So, while Clair Obscur 2 might not be the next major release from Sandfall, it's definitely happening at some point.

Further, the next Clair Obscur game will almost certainly delve into lore connected to The Continent, The Paintress, etc., on some level, even if that means jumping backward or forward in time or even stepping outside the painting to see what's going on with the notorious Writers that waged war with the Painters in the first place.

That said, Broche's comments also suggest that an entirely different IP may be in the works at Sandfall as well, which is arguably even more exciting than an official Clair Obscur sequel. If Sandfall is sticking to their guns and making games under the same winning philosophy/mindset that brought us Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, we're in for something truly special.
