Cillian Murphy & Chris Evans' $40M Sci-Fi Box Office Flop Is Finally Getting Its Deserved Redemption As A Streaming Hit 19 Years Later

A film from nearly two decades ago with Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans gets new success in 2026. Both Evans and Murphy's movies and TV careers have come a long way over the last 19 years, but a project they did in the late 2000s is now finding itself a new audience.

Originally released on April 6, 2007, the Sunshine movie is finding a new audience nearly 20 years later, but this time on streaming. According to FlixPatrol, the sci-fi installment has climbed on the streaming charts, as Sunshine is currently trending at #2 in Romania and Moldova.

The film, which was directed by Danny Boyle, based on a script from Alex Garland, is also performing as #3 for HBO Max subscribers in Hungary, while holding the #4 spot in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Sunshine is also trending at #5 on the Warner Bros.-owned streaming service in Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

While it is not available on HBO Max in the United States, Sunshine is on Apple TV for any American subscribers who want to relive or experience it for the first time. During its theatrical run, the film grossed only $34.8 million at the worldwide box office, as the project was reportedly produced on a $40 million budget.

Despite its disappointing box office result, Sunshine is holding a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 171 submitted reviews. The Evans and Murphy-starring film also has 73% on the Popcornmeter.
