Chun-Li’s Stunt Double In The Street Fighter Movie Had To Wear Butt Pads To Match Actor Callina Liang’s Thunder Thighs

Chun-Li is one of the most iconic characters in the Street Fighter series, and among her most defining features, such as her buns and blue qipao dress, are also her massive thunder thighs. The girl is known as a kicker, and her physique tells that story when she’s not throwing kicks. In recreating her look, the upcoming Street Fighter movie had to have the character’s stunt double wear butt pads to match.

In a Q&A with the cast and the film’s cast and crew, director Kitao Sakurai told the story of how Chun-Li’s stunt doubles had to wear these enhanced butt pads in order to convincingly pull off actor Callina Liang’s body shape after she had undergone rigorous training to match Chun-Li’s iconic legs.

“I knew it was serious when we were filming a scene kind of later in the movie, and I saw Callina’s stunt double, and I was like, ‘What are you wearing?’ Sakurai said. “And they were like, these butt pads that she had to wear just to match Callina’s physique,”.

“Then we wore them out of solidarity, too,” Ken actor Noah Centineo jokes.

“We all had huge legs,” Liang said.

Last month, Liang broke down her fitness journey to recreate Chun-Li’s legs in an interview with Empire Magazine (thanks, IGN), which included a martial arts training regimen and a high-protein diet, which she said was so rigorous she nearly puked during the whole thing.

“Chun-Li is all kicks,” she said. “So we did a bunch of Taekwondo training, Muay Thai, and Wushu (Kung Fu). I did two hours of that a day and strengthened my legs a lot and changed my diet drastically. When I was bulking, I ate 12 eggs a day. Every two hours I had to have a meal, and I was on the verge of throwing up. But it worked. By the end of the shoot, my thighs had grown six-and-a-half centimeters (roughly two inches) each.”

Liang sounds pretty committed to capturing Chun-Li on screen, and even notes that she downloaded multiple Street Fighter games onto her PlayStation 5 to record and study different Chun-Li attacks.

The new Street Fighter movie comes to theaters on October 16.
