Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. Bearing in mind the fact that it was only really around for a few years in the mid to late-90s, Chrono Trigger did a really brilliant job of burrowing its way into the public imagination and staying there. Across just the two main games we have, and the side project Radical Dreamers, the series is still one of the better-selling that Square Enix has ever produced.
As such, it has been a surprise to not see it return over the last almost three decades in a big way, and longtime fans have been left to sadly wait to hear more. That said, we are very much in the era of bringing back older titles via remasters and remakes, and conversation has finally turned to Chrono Trigger being left to gather dust.
Over on Twitter/X, one user shared a post asking the community whether they would like to see an HD-2D remake of the original Chrono Trigger, after games like Dragon Quest I-III proved that both the appetite of the audience and the technology needed to do it are both in the right place at the moment.
In response, there were all sorts of feelings, from those who vehemently agreed, to those who really aren't sure that the HD-2D formula is the right approach in this case.
"Yeah. But their sprites would have to be changed. If you're going to use the same sprites, the original's right there," one comment read.
While another added, "Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games of all time. Loved it since the first time I played it. Still have a cartridge of it but bought it on steam when it showed up there. I would buy it again if it’s remade with the love that went into the original."
A third was less sure, saying, "I don't care for the Octopath Traveler vibe, but I'd be interested in a Chrono Trigger remaster of some kind."
"Probably the only way SE is willing to touch it at this point. Better to update it while retaining as much of the original as possible. A new generation deserves to experience it," another said.
The reality is that Chrono Trigger is very much a series of the past at this point, and we likely won't get any new experiences in the franchise, unless Square Enix pulls a monumental about-turn. That leaves remakes as the only potential port of call for a fresh release, so we should probably all get behind it if we want it to become a reality.
