Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is poised to break the billion-dollar mark at the box office when everything is said and done. The director is coming freshly off of the massive success of Oppenheimer, and it stands to reason that this massive epic, which is taking up tons of IMAX and traditional screens, will dominate the box office for the foreseeable future.

But as far as tie-ins go, there isn't much. Christopher Nolan's works generally stand on their own, but that's changing for The Odyssey. According to a new official announcement, there's an official video game for The Odyssey on the way (via Polygon).

Titled The Odyssey: Defy the Gods, the official game is out now via Roblox. Here's the full description from the listing: "The official companion to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. A survival sailing adventure across the ancient ocean. Pack a crew, ration your supplies, and appease the gods for the right of safe passage."

In the game, you'll be able to scavenge for food and resources, as well as lost crew, while "surviving storms and whirlpools." There are also puzzles to solve on islands for rewards, as well as multiplayer support to sail with friends. The Odyssey: Defy the Gods promises a "new ocean every voyage."

Strangely, this is not a user creation. The publisher is stated as "The Odyssey Movie," and this is indeed an official release. With Nolan getting involved in Fortnite years ago, it looks like the director and his associates are going to connect with a younger audience once again through a live-service game.

As many have pointed out, Nolan is also not elitist about smaller-screen experiences, even if he wants people to go to a theater for the first viewing. Speaking to CinemaBlend, he explains: "For audiences who didn't get to experience it in the theater, they're still aware when they watch that film on whatever format, they have a different expectation of that than they would of a TV commercial or a television program. The audience is very sophisticated in that regard. And the weight of the initial presentation carries with the film through its entire life, in whatever format."

With 630 positive ratings and 112 negative ratings at the moment, things seem to be going OK for the official adaptation, even though it's housed within Roblox, a game many people will never want to engage with. For reference, voice chat and camera options are not supported, and the servers accommodate 50 people at a time.

While I don't necessarily need a video game adaptation of The Odyssey, it could be utterly fantastic if done right. For now, there's Roblox, and it doesn't seem like we'll get anything else for it anytime soon.
